STORMS
I hadn't talked to Harry in weeks. Neither of us had made the move in order to speak to one another which I was thankful for. Maybe he finally got the notion. But he had not disappeared that fast. He still hung around the town and I saw him in school and in class every once in a while. He'd look up at me or over in my direction for a moment before turning his focus to something else. No words. No actions. That also doesn't mean that I couldn't get him out of my head. He had been stuck there like someone glued his feet to my brain. He wouldn't just wouldn't leave. If I was supposed to hate him, why was he sticking around in my head like that? You were never told to hate him, Lucia. You were told to watch yourself when you're around him. You just want to believe that you're not supposed to be friends with him.
It was the middle of the first week back to school after winter break. The bell had rung signalling the end of the day and everyone started to pour out of the classrooms. I walked down a couple halls and finally got to my locker. Half of the school's population had swarmed out to go home so there were maybe twenty people in the halls? I grabbed the books I needed, dumped out the ones I didn't, and grabbed my winter coat from the hanger. I slipped the jacket over my arms and zipped my bag shut before shutting the locker and locking it. As I walked down the stairs, I swung my bang over my shoulders and zipped my jacket up to my chin. My mum told me there was supposed to be a snow storm around the time that I walked home from school, and since her shift started when I got out, she couldn't come and get me.
I pushed open the side doors of the school to see that I was the last person to leave. The snow that was on the ground crunched under my docs as I made my way to the sidewalk. It wasn't terrible but it also wasn't the best thing in the world. Heavy flurries started to drape the trees, ground and even my shoulders and hood. Just as I was about to turn the corner a black car stopped near me and I backed up slightly. The car window rolled down and at first I saw an orange beanie, then the brown hair and face that followed.
"Do you want a ride home?" Harry asked as he looked out of his rearview mirror and then back at me. His hand was resting on the steering wheel and he used the other to cup his chin in the part of his hand that connected his thumb and index finger. I would have said no, but knowing that there was a storm coming and that I was cold I had to take up his offer.
"Sure." I said as I started to walk around to the passenger side door and as I did he rolled his window up. I opened the door and slid into the chair and saw him looking over at me. His black jacket's collar was popped up fairly high to cover his neck, and under that he had that same grey sweater on from Christmas dinner. I looked away from him and placed my back pack by my feet as I did up my seatbelt.
"You alright?" He asked as he pulled away from the curb.
"Yeah, I'm fine." I said as I began to soak in the heat of the car. I kept my eyes focused outside and I tried to concentrate on the flurries instead of the small talk.
"Glad you didn't put up a fight this time." He said after a moment as he turned off his signal. I looked over at him to see him smile, not smirk.
"Well last time, there wasn't a storm coming." I reminded him and he laughed a little as he turned his eyes back to the road.
"Right. So that means you'll get in my car when the weather is bad." He stated. I watched as he nodded as if it was a fact that was good to know. It looked like he mentally marked that down. Great. Does that mean he'd be on patrol when the weather turns to shit? Lucia, he's trying to do something nice, shut up. The ride was mainly silent aside from the times where he would try to make more small talk. I learned over the last couple of times to just shoot him down with one word answers. I didn't mind the silence although it was kind of uncomfortable. He'd clear his throat once and a while but I kept my eyes outside. I didn't know if he wanted my attention when he did that but I never bothered to look.
"It's beautiful out isn't it?" He asked quietly. I was shocked to hear that come out of his mouth for some reason. I turned to him and watched as he looked out of the windows as well. I nodded although he wasn't looking.
"Yeah." I said as I turned back to watch the flakes fall. We finally turned down my street and a ride that seemed to last forever finally came to a stop. He pulled into the empty drive way and parked the car and let it idle for a moment.
"Thanks." I said as I turned to him and smiled. He smiled and nodded back as he rubbed his lower thighs with his hands. I opened the car door and grabbed my bag off the floor before turning towards him again.
"So is this going to happen again?" He asked, laughing slightly.
"Probably not." I shook my head while laughing as I closed the door.
"We'll see." I heard him say just before it shut. I walked up to the stairs before looking back behind me to see him pulling out of the small driveway. He looked at me before driving off and I couldn't help but think,
Would I cave again if he asked?
