DINNER part two
It was the night Eden and Violet had been preparing for for the past eleven days. Eden threw on some indie Christmas music downstairs because it suited her style. She was never one to like Christmas music or the movies, they were all too cheery for her.
Eden tried to blank out the thought that a whole family of anonymous people were about to join her and her mother for dinner. She walked over to the window and peeked through the drawn curtains to see snow cascading to the ground. The sun was setting off in the distance, the sky cloudy as usual, but it was beautiful out. Naked trees held snow on their branches as the rest fell and coated everything. She noticed cars drive by, a few every couple of minutes before one pulled over to the curb in front of the house. Eden noticed a man in the drivers seat and watched as who she thought to be Anne come around the front of the car and onto the sidewalk. The woman looked lovely, in a red dress that suited everything about her; her smile, hair, skin, eyes. Eden closed the curtains before turning around again and taking a look at her room. She peered down at her outfit and widened her eyes when she realized she'd only done her makeup.
"Shit, shit, shit, shit." Eden murmured over and over to herself as she ran to her closet. She pushed items of clothing back and forth until she rested her eyes on a blue velvet bodycon dress that ended just above the knee. She took it off the rack as she heard Violet say her greetings loudly.
"Hey!" She said excitedly. Eden then heard Anne speak and an older male greet her back.
"Merry Chirstmas!" Anne exclaimed before Eden turned her focus back to her own problem. She threw off her sweater and track pants and slid into the dress. She pulled the thin straps to rest perfectly on her shoulders before stepping back from the mirror. Eden cocked her head to the side as she looked at the length of the dress. She smiled at herself feeling content with the way she looked. She decided to place on a small black velvet choker and tucked her hair behind her ears as Violet yelled for her.
"Eden?" She heard her mum call outside of the door. Violet gently tapped her knuckles on the surface before speaking again. "Everyone's here."
"I'll be out soon. Give me two seconds." Eden walked over to roll her perfume onto her neck and wrists. She proceeded to her door after giving herself one last look over. She walked down the dark hallway to the stairs where light illuminated the steps.
Once she reached the landing, she stepped closer to the living room. When she was in the doorway, Eden saw everyone piled in the tiny room. I saw Anne sitting with her husband on the couch, her daughter beside the couple and Harry. Harry is Anne's son? Holy shit. He was the first to turn and look at her. The surprise on his face to see Eden matched hers. He was sitting in the chair across from his family. He wore black jeans and a grey sweater that was a little big on his torso, but it looked like it still fit him.
"There she is!" Anne piped up happily. I looked at her instead of Harry and saw her get up from her seat. She came over to Eden and opened her arms for a hug.
"It's lovely to meet you. Merry Christmas, Eden." Eden smiled at her as they enveloped each other for a moment.
"Merry Christmas, Anne." The two pulled apart but Anne kept her hands on Eden's shoulders. She looked at Eden's clothes and then back to her face.
"You look lovely, sweetheart." She smiled, her teeth showing from behind her lips. Eden flattened out the fabric as she thanked Anne for the compliment. Anne made her way back to the couch before turning around again.
