DINNER  part one

A couple of days away from winter break, Violet decided to deliver Eden the news. Violet called Eden downstairs and since Friday's were usually family nights, she was expecting a movie or something like usual. The look on Violet's face was a dead give away it was something other than family night. It looked like she had been holding in this fantastic news all week and couldn't hold it from Eden anymore.

"What's up?" Eden asked as she came to the bottom of the stairs, keeping her hand on the banister as she cocked her head to one side slightly.

"You know how we have our Christmas dinners?" She asked with a large smile on her face as she leaned on the frame of the arch that lead to the living room.

"Yeah. It's going to kind of be hard since everyone's across the ocean." Eden said unamused with a frown. A lonely Christmas, how terrible. It was going to be the first Christmas dinner that they weren't surrounded by family.

"Well," Violet started, "Since this is the first year that we're alone, I thought I'd ask Anne if she wanted to join us for dinner..." Violet started but Eden interrupted her to clear up who Anne was.

"The lady from work right? Really cheery?" She asked with an eyebrow raised.

"Yes, that Anne." Violet nodded and laughed. Eden nodded back and encouraged her mum to proceed with the news, "She said yes! She's bringing over her family. Anne said they're free this year and her daughter is coming home from college to spend time with them for the break. So it'll be the four plus us two."

"Four of them?" Eden inquired. Violet nodded.

"Yeah, Anne, her husband and her two kids." She further explained with a smile spread across her face. Eden imagined one of Anne's children were younger, about eight or nine and couldn't help but be slightly annoyed at the thought. After all, she wasn't very fond of younger children.

"Well that's great!" Eden chimed with a smile mimicking her mother's. "Do we know what we're making or how we're decorating?"

"Funny story, sit down with me and we'll plan everything out, yeah?" Violet said as she ducked her head down slightly, sucking air in between her clenched teeth. Eden laughed at how unorganized her mother was a week prior to the dinner.

"Sure, I can do that." Eden agreed as she stepped off the stairs and over to her mum. They both plopped down on the couch and as Violet started to get Pinterest up on the internet, she turned to Eden.

"You're going to dress nice, right?" Violet asked with one of her eyebrows shot up.

"Do I not dress nicely on special occasions?" Eden questioned jokingly.

"Of course you do, Eden." Violet laughed, "I'm just nervous that's all. No one has been here since we moved and I want everything to be perfect. You should come shopping with me for that night. We have to get a load of things to have nice presentation." She rambled on, "Table cloths, cutlery... Oh! If they go in the kitchen, our dish cloths look horrendous."

"Mum, I don't think they'll care about what the dish cloths look like." Eden laughed. Violet nodded as she snapped out of her never-ending though process.
