Chapter 2
IT IS SUMMER 2008
Holy shit it’s a man, I thought as I found myself looking threw the screen door not to find Sapphire but what appeared to be a tall man in a huge oversized hoodie.
“Hi”, he said. “I know it’s late and this is going to be a very unusual request—and I really hope that you don’t say no—but I was wondering, -clash if thunder- hoping you’d consider –clash of thunder- to let me stay the night as shelter from the rain?”
WTF this dude has got to be crazy. . . How dare he ask to spend the night . . . ? I mean he doesn’t even know me, and I him. What if he’s some crazy psycho killer that just wants to murder-
“Don’t worry I’m not some crazy psycho killer that just wants to murder you neither am I a thief. I just don’t really know where I am and don’t know what happened to my money and I need a place to stay and your light was the only one on.”
Damn he must be desperate.
“I’m not desperate I just need a dry place to stay,” his voice sounded a little tense. I guess this was embarrassing.
Awkward. . . it’s like he knows what I’m thinking, well he must have mulled this over for a long time, or I’m so tired that I’m talking and don’t realize it.
“Do you think that you could spare me some space for the night, as collateral I have a pair of diamond earrings.”
“Are you sure you’re not a thief?” I found myself asking.
“Positive,” he replied. I tried to get a good look at him, but he was shrouded in the darkness of the hood from his hoodie. Not going to lie but I was skeptical, and a little glad I didn’t get to see his face. I didn’t want to be rude or shallow. But every girl knows that the face is what would determine the outcome in this type of situation.
“Well I’d have to make sure that you’re gone before my dad comes home tomorrow, or he’ll flip. So, I guess its ok. I’m going to trust you. Please don’t let me down. Against everything I’ve been taught—the amount of money my dad put into desensitizing me—I’m going to let you in. Just please don’t take advantage, or try to kill me and such.”
“Ok,” he whispered.
With that I opened the screen door for the man and closed it behind him. I also grabbed a towel and put it under his feet to soak up the water that had been dripping from his clothes.
“You’re soaked to the bone and . . . You’re soaking my RUG! . . .That better come out or I’ll make you pay to fix it.” I spoke while looking at him and lacing my long couch with blankets.
“Sorry, do you think that I might be able to get a dry pair of clothes? I mean not yours of course because I’m not sure they’d fit. . . maybe your dad's, if he has any,” he queried and it seemed almost as if he was confusing himself.
“Yeah sure, just take off the heavy stuff and leave it on the towel and I’ll get you something,” I said as I ran past him up stairs.
I found a pair of my dads’ old pajamas. I felt his presence coming towards me, and without looking back, I asked, “Boxers or boxer briefs? . . . I keep telling my dad that he’s too old to be wearing this stuff but, he never listens and just gives me the whole ‘you’re only as old as you feel". I said deepening my voice in a mocking manner.
After not hearing anything, fear struck my heart. Oh, my God, he’s gonna kill me.
“Boxer briefs” he stated coolly, “I’d just feel wrong wearing your dads’ boxers and letting it hang low.”

“Al-right, the shower is that way.” I pointed, still not turned around because my face was hot like a red pepper, and felt hot like one too.
Once I heard the bathroom door close and the shower turn on I quickly ran downstairs and put the wet clothes into the washer and cleaned up the puddles of water they left behind. Before I knew it there had been no sign that he had been there so I grabbed my book again, set myself on the corner of the sofa and continued reading with the sound of rain on the window panes.
I lost myself in the book and all thoughts of the stranger in my shower seemed to disappear.
“Ahem.” I jumped out of my trance and stared up at a half naked. . . guy?! Why this was no man, but a guy; one that was about my age. He was extremely handsome, amazing body, and . . . The fact that his body was glistening and he was half naked hit me like a ton of bricks.
I gasped as I covered my eyes and he let out a chuckle.
“I’m not that ugly now.”
“I-I’m not looking ‘til you have clothes on, pervert.”
“I’m not a pervert, and I would have clothes on but I don’t know where you put them.”
“In the room you followed me into. . . now hurry up.”
As soon as I heard him up the stairs I walked to the washer and changed the clothes over to the dryer. When I headed back to the living room I saw him there, standing at attention. I stopped at a couch and tilted my head to look at him awkwardly.
He stepped towards me, picked up my hand, and kissed it.
What the Fuck!
He smirked as his lips left my hand. “I never got to introduce myself. My name is Avory.”
“Uh . . . um. . . ahem. Ye-ahhhh. . . Soooo . . . I hope you’re comfortable,” I choked out.
“Yes, thank you for the clothes and for letting me stay with you and for being so hospitable.”
“Your welcome, let me just lay down some ground rules. No going upstairs. There is a bathroom down here and a guest toothbrush. No stealing, no lying, and no killing. And keep personal space in your mind, as I don’t like people coming into my square,” I said lining out an invisible square around my body. “I know I’m making myself clear so there’s no point in asking. But I will ask you something, where were you that you had on a tux under your hoodie thing.”
“It’s a long story that hopefully I can tell you later because it’s late, and I'm tired.”
I looked at the clock on the wall and yawned after reading that it would soon be 2am. With that I went to my room to sleep.
