Losing Aaron

Irene's reincarnation? What's that supposed to mean? Is the tale that she died true?

"I already think I've figured out most of it," Laurence explained, "the one about Irene's reincarnation is pretty clear, and I'm guessing that's Aph,"

My eyes widened. I couldn't be, could I?

Laurence continued on, "the guard I figured is Garroth and I'm the knight. It makes sense since we are both trying to win her over," everyone gasped except for Lucinda. Guess she saw right through them.

"We are trying to win her heart, though I'm not sure about the gain full power part. Last but not least is the part about her vanquishing on the winter solstice shower-I'm not sure about that either,"  he looked around to see if anyone had even the slightest of clue to what it was referring to.

No one seemed to know. Lucinda appeared to be thinking but kept silent. I'll be the first to admit, I was scared. All of these crazy things continued to happen and I had no way of stopping it.

"I'm going to umm-" I pointed at the forest signaling that I wanted to go walk around.

"I'll go with you," Aaron suggested, "after Dimitri told me about the strange thing in the forest I figure it'll be best you not go alone,"

I sighed and but nodded nonetheless.

We began walking in silence. It wasn't awkward, it was almost as if we had lost the ability to form words. I didn't mind the silence, I had come here to think after all.

"Aphmau," Aaron broke the silence, "you should stay away from Garroth,"

I narrowed my eyes, "what do you mean?"

"I saw you two in the forest yesterday, I dont think you should be with him alone until we figure out what's causing him to lose control and how to stop it," I blushed slightly at the thought of him witnessing my little scene with Garroth but I kept my composure.

"Thank you for your concern, but I can take care of myself," I put my hands on my hips and glared.

"I know you can," he looked down at me, "but would you be able to hurt Garroth to avoid taking damage?"

My breath hitched at the thought of ever hurting Garroth and I shook my head violently.

"If you have people with you it won't be necessary to hurt him. Trust me, I'm asking this of you for your and Garroth's own good," I nodded my head and continued walking. Remind me never to argue against Aaron again, he made sure to put my argument to shame.

"Aphmau," he stopped me again, "promise that if it ever does come down to either hurting him or dying, that you won't hesitate,"

"I'd rather die than hurt Garroth," I said firmly.

"Do you love him?" He looked at me dead in the eyes with an unreadable expression.

I didn't answer him and just continued to stare at his eyes, "I'll ask again, do you love him?"

This time I didn't hesitate, "i dont know," and that was the truth. I didn't know whether or not I loved Garroth.

He sighed, "at least promise me you'll be careful and that you'll think of every option before giving up your life,"

"I promise," I smiled at him and continued walking down the natural pathway.

As we were walking I couldn't help but think about the prophecy. 'A guard and knight shall fight and shatter' shatter as in die? Or become heart broken? The possibilities are endless and in all honesty I do not want to be a part of this. Nor do I want Garroth and Laurence to be dragged into this. I wish I had a greater power, enough to protect them.

Suddenly I heard the slight beat of wings coming from above us. They sounded like very large wings. Apparently Aaron heard it too because he unscathed his sword and got in his fighting stance. Before I even saw the monstrosity, Aaron had disappeared from beside me. I faintly heard Aaron shouting out, telling me to run.

I entered a panicked state, "Aaron!" I shouted up at the sky.

I dashed off into the forest hoping to not attract attention from whatever snatched Aaron up. I could hear wings beating behind me, but I couldn't see. Apparently Aaron and I had spent longer in the forest than we thought. It was dark outside. I continued running aimlessly hoping to somehow miraculously find the camp.

I hit something hard and fell onto the ground. I slowly opened my eyes to find Laurence on top of me with a worried expression. I pushed him up and took hold of his wrist before dashing back off in the direction I was going. Apparently I had been heading in the right direction because we stepped out into a clearing and the camp came into view.

I continued dragging Laurence until we reached Zoey's house. Pushing Laurence in and jumping in after, I shoved the door closed and locked it.

"Aphmau," Laurence said breathlessly, "what in the name of Irene is going on?"

I shook my head violently and slid down to the floor with my back against the door. I put my head in my hands and began sobbing loudly. I heard footsteps creating the assumption that Zoey had heard the ruckus and came downstairs. I could hear distant voices but I couldn't make them out. The image of Aaron disappearing right in front of my eyes kept on replaying.

"Aphmau, please," I could hear Laurence, "you're scaring the hell out of me,"

Looking up at him with my tear stained face I could see how much worry his sky blue eyes held. Why? Why did anything I do always end in disaster? I just wanted to take a walk and I managed to lose Aaron. Even as he was being snatched up by a nasty beast he was shouting out for me to run. Why is everyone trying to protect me?

Laurence sat down next to me and wrapped his arms around me securely. I looked up at him and he gave me a confident smile which attempted to hide his worry.

"Aph," he whispered into my ear, "can you tell me what happened?"

I looked back down and spoke in a tiny voice.

"Aaron. I lost Aaron,"
