A Familiar Face

We ended up being 30 minutes late. Of course we got a lot of strange stares. Especially from Aaron and Lucinda. The moment we walked in everything was quiet and the atmosphere had a depressing feel to it.

Wasn't I crying over Aaron only a few minutes ago? How did Garroth cheer me up so quickly?

Garroth cleared his throat, "right then, let's get this meeting started shall we?"

Everyone nodded their heads eagerly awaiting the theory. I wanted to know what happened to Aaron, believe me, I do. But in that moment I just wanted to be back in the forest with Garroth's arms wrapped securely around my waist--laughing as if all of our problems had disappeared.

"I think it was a Mongriel," Garroth looked down.

Lucinda and Zoey's eyes widened, "what?!" They shouted out simultaneously.

"All the evidence leads up to it," Garroth continued, "they were thought to be extinct the same time Lady Irene died, Aaron was carried away faster than the eye could see--not to mention it could fly,"

He paused for a moment, "now we suddenly find these ruins, a possible reincarnation of Lady Irene, and a prophecy--doesn't it only make sense for the creature to be a Mongriel?"

"Wait I'm confused," Garroth turned to look at me, "what's a Mongriel?"

Lucinda, Zoey and Garroth all looked at me with pity. I knew that whatever it was, it wasn't good. Aaron was in danger. And we needed to get him out, now.

"A Mongriel was a beast from long ago," Lucinda explained, "no one really knows exactly what they were, but they say it was a mix of a lion, a giant butterfly, and an alligator,"

Zoey turned to look at me, "Aphmau, you have to be prepared for the fact that Aaron may no longer be alive,"

"You're kidding me right? Of course he's alright!" I started to panic, "He's Aaron! He couldn't die. Not while he still has so much left in him. And Lilith--he cares about Lilith so much. Zoey he can't be dead! H-he can take care of himself,"

I was now sobbing again. I know Aaron can take care of himself. But he isn't perfect. The possibility of losing him forever scares me.

Surprisingly, the one who came to comfort me was Katelyn. She embraced me in a tight hug and gently pat my back.

"You really care about him don't you?" She said. I felt something warm on my shoulder. Katelyn was also crying.

"I-I really do," I hugged her very tightly and just let myself feel comfortable with one of my closest friends. And to think we had started off as enemies.

I could hear the shuffling of feet and the opening of a door. And then it closed. I opened my eyes to find everyone except Katelyn, Lucinda, Garroth, Laurence, and Zoey gone. There really are some amazing people with me, to think they all started off as strangers--now I can't live without any of them. They all mean so much to me.

"Aph," Laurence spoke softly, "are you going to be okay?"

I nodded my head and stepped out of Katelyn's embrace. Her cheeks were in fact stained with tears. She wiped away at her eye and smile gently. I smiled back to show her I appreciated the hug.

"I know this is a lot to ask considering how recent this all is," Zoey said, "but could you take us to the exact spot were Aaron was taken? I know you're probably still sad, but the sooner we get him out the better,"

I nodded my head and wiped away my own tears, "yeah, like you said, the sooner the better. I know Aaron would do the same for us,"

"It's settled then," Lucinda paused, "though we should probably wait for Emmalyn and Kenmur, they're supposed to be arriving later today and they probably know more about this stuff than any of us,"

Laurence faced me, "until then you should relax Aph, a lot of stress is coming from this--you should take a walk or something,"

"Why the hell would I take a walk?" I chuckled at the strange suggestion. A walk is how Aaron was taken in the first place.

Laurence chuckled lightly as well, "you never fail to make me smile,"

I blushed and of course Lucinda caught on to it.

"Oh," she smirked, "what's wrong aph-y? Does Laurence make you nervous?"

"Lucinda!" Garroth shouted at her.

"Ooh someones jealous," she busted out laughing, "calm down Garroth, I'm just trying to lighten the mood,"

I started laughing as well. Laurence did in fact make me nervous. He also sent butterflies to my stomach, but he didn't make my heart skip a beat.

"Yeah Garroth, you jealous?" Laurence smirked.

I smacked his arm playfully, "Laurence!"

He laughed so hard he fell on the floor and hit his head against the wall. The sound was incredibly loud, but I guess he really has been through worse because he just started laughing even harder. His laugh was really cute and contagious. Even Katelyn was having trouble breathing. Katelyn hardly laughs, and when she does it's normally just a chuckle. It's really rare to find her gasping for air.

Laurence tried to stand and ended up falling back down again. Soon enough everyone was to the point where they lacked air. You know, where the laughter becomes soundless. Zoey was laughing so much she was crying.

"Laurence," I said in between fits of laughter, "st-stop,"

"N-not my fault I always f-fall," of course his comment only made us laugh even more.

After the laughter calmed down I managed to catch my breath. I looked around to find everyone with a big smile on their face, even Garroth who was angry only minutes ago. I guess that's the beauty in the people I find, they always find a silver lining.

The door swung open and I saw Kiki at the doorway. She was sweating and Leona was gasping for air behind her.

"Aphmau, you may want to take a look at this," she told me.

I stepped outside and found Kenmur standing around a misshapen body. It seemed unrecognizable to me at first glance, but when I stepped closer the face became clear.

"Oh my Irene," I dropped to the floor.

"You can't be dead,"
