Chapter 9: sneaky secrets

Chapter 9

CYAN'S P.O.V.

Cyan: 8 months until awakening

"Hey Aku, i was wondering if I could ask you something..." I said aloud after almost ten straight minutes of helping him struggle through one of my old children's books.

He looked up at me, a huge smile on his face, and nodded. After I had agreed to help him work on his grammar, his attitude seemed to shift completely. He was so excited to spend time with me and speak any chance he possibly could. "You ask me anything Cyan. I answer true."

I smiled back at him. "You mean you'll answer truthfully." I corrected gently, happy when he nodded his head again, as if making a mental note to never forget that. "I was just thinking, um, you have a lot of interesting markings on your body. I was curious why..."

"They merman marks." He answered as soon as i finished talking. "I think that word is it. They magic seals put on to give me...abilities i think word is it. Each mark gives a ability."

"So they each give you a power?" I clarified, looking at his exposed chest and arms that had to contain at least fifteen marks that seemed to swirl and connect together. "How did you get them?"

"Mother gave me. Mermaid can give merman mark with magic. Mermaid have all abilities already. She give power to merman if chooses. Only one merman has all of marks. That vincent." He paused, looking down at a specific mark on his chest. He runs his finger along it. "All but this one. This one just mine. Mother say she no mean to give me mark like this. She say she not know what mean. I think Vincent know, but he not tell me."

"Why not?" I frowned. Aku had every right to know what was on his body. Why wouldn't he tell him? How could his mother not know if she had been the one to put it on him?

"Vincent lie to me lots. He think I tell mother everything. Not true. I keep lots secrets from her." He mumbled.

"Like what?" I asked, noticing the way he seemed eager to share with me. He looked around, as if he was certain someone was setting him up, before turning to me.

"Sometime I sneak from ocean at night and go walk on land. Old woman on coast lets me make pretty music on harp. Harp beautiful with strings and I play till sun come up and then i come back ocean." He whispered, his excitement increasing with each word. "One time, i sneak up and Vincent catch me. He not tell on me. He say I really good at harp. He say he play before mother took music away."

"She took it away?" I ask, wondering if he just didnt know the words for what he was trying to say.

He nodded quickly, lowering his voice even more to continue. "Vincent make music for human king. Mother found him one day and change him, but Vincent keep coming up land to play so mom give Mark to take music away. Vincent no play now. Magic stronger than talent."

"Oh." I frowned, suddenly feeling so much worse about things I had said to Vincent the last time we had spoken. To have your passion taken away must be one of the worst feelings in the world.

"Mother give Vincent all Marks after years. He then go to sea witch and she give him all she can too. He has all and know all." Aku concluded.

"Do you really wanna know what that mark means?" I asked slowly, making sure that Vincent hadn't suddenly snuck into the room. I had sent him far away from us and told him that I would go straight to Margarette and tell her all about who his real mate was if he bothered me while I spent time with Aku. After knowing how cruel Margarette had already been to Vincent, I found my resolve to actually tell her waiver.
