Chapter 7
CYAN'S P.O.V.
Cyan: 9 months until awakening
I was really trying not to stare.
My eyes burned as i forced them to stare down into my lap, blatantly trying to ignore the spectacle in front of me. Am i the only one disturbed here, i thought, as i heard another splash from across from me.
Ms. Margarette and her children had been here for around a month and i had yet to get used to the way they ate. Big pots full of water were sat in front of them every meal and although i had never seen inside one, Michellie had told me they were full of living oysters and crabs and other crustaceans that they would grab with their bare hands and use some kind of magical heated palm technique to cook it. When I had asked Margarette to show me the magic, she had taken my hand before i could react and heated her palm to a level that felt almost like fire against my skin. I ripped my hand away and spent the next hour running my burn under cold water. Once King Elijah had found out, a rule was set that none of the new visitors were allowed to show me any other supernatural abilities.
"Is something the matter little one?" Bruftus asked from beside me, forcing me to look up.
"Nothing. I'm just not all that hungry." I said quietly, my eyes immediately drawn to the way Margarette was tearing apart a live crab. Her son, Aku, watched his mother as well. After weeks of trying not to stare at them, I had noticed that he only ate once his mother and sister were done and then he would help clear the table. He seemed accustomed to waiting on the two women and became noticeably upset whenever someone would attempt to serve him as well.
"You must not watch other men so closely." Bruftus whispered to me, so low I almost didn't catch it. I knew he spoke that low so the others at the table wouldn't pick up on it. Sometimes it was difficult to have a private conversation in a room full of people with supernatural hearing. "While you and I both know it is harmless fascination, King Elijah has an especially hard time sharing your attention."
The blush of my cheeks burned more than the still tender burn on my hand. "What are you two whispering about?" Michellie asked, forcing all attention to be turned to us.
"We whisper with purpose." Bruftus answered in his own special way of telling Michi it wasn't any of her business.
"Keeping secrets are we?" Margarette chimed in, wiping her mouth with the napkin Aku handed her. "How very fitting for a future king."
"I wasn't-" I began.
"Do you think you'll make a good king little human?" Margarette continued. "Do you think it wise that you should take over in the middle of a war that started before your lifetime?"
"I don't-"
"In fact, do you think it's fair that after King Elijah has spent years building up a unified and rich kingdom, he should have to hand it over to a boy imposed upon him by the goddess?" She questioned.
"What do you-"
"Because I think the very thought that you could protect yourself is laughable, let alone an entire species. I think-"
"I think," Michellie interjected, "that you should keep your fish lips shut about things you couldn't possibly understand. I think you should focus more on your pathetic little palace at the bottom of the miserable ocean and a little less on the infinite wisdoms of the goddess. I also think you should be a lot kinder to the person whose house you're currently seeking refuge in."
"Oh i am kind to the person who owns this palace." Margarette laughed, seemingly unfazed by any of the things Michi had said. "But King Elijah isn't here to accept my kindness." And with those words the queen of the mermaids had utterly denounced any claim I had to the crown. In her eyes, this was Elijah's castle, Elijah's throne, Elijah's kingdom...
