Chapter 14
ELIJAH'S P.O.V.
Cyan: 4 months until awakening
"A werewolf has an average lifespan of?"
"Um..." Cyan frowned at me, his eyebrows scrunched together in confusion. "Forever?"
"Wrong. No creature lives forever, not even sun people Cyan." I clarified for him. "An average werewolf can live around 1,000 years. A werewolf blessed by their goddess can live about as long as a sun person, meaning until someone slays them."
"Right." he nodded quickly, scribbling down notes.
"A werewolf can be killed in two ways. Either by a wound to themselves that's so strong, a wolves bond cannot heal it or by the death or rejection of their mate." I added. "Now before you ask, a wolves bond is not the same as a mates bond. A mates bond is formed between destined souls. A wolf gets only one mate and will immediately feel a pull to that person when they meet after the age of maturity, which is usually around eighteen. A mates bond is stronger than any bond they have which is why when their mate dies or rejects them, their own wolf dies as well. Without their wolves, their bodies shut down and they're nothing but comatose beings who will never awaken. Their hearts slow over the course of a month or two until they die. A wolves bond is a bond formed between their family and pack. If they're close enough, they may feel each other's distress and can even heal one another, much like a mate bond, but a wolves bond isn't strong enough to kill connected wolves. DO you understand?"
"I-I think so..." He mumbled.
"Which is why when we attack the wolves, we go for older wolves, who would most likely have a mate. That way two die on the battlefield and those that share a wolves bond with them are momentarily stunned by the distress of their bonded and more can be taken out." I explained.
"Doesn't that sound... i don't know... cruel to you?" He looked up from his paper. "To slaughter entire families?"
"If not them, it's us. After all, they use similar tactics against us. Those who are bonded among sun people bare the mark of the person they belong with. Often the wolves kidnap one of the pair and torment them, forcing the other to feel it all and slowly go mad. If not that, they slaughter only bonded couples, those with bite marks on them. That way when their partner feels the snapping of the bond, they're incapacitated long enough to be fatally wounded."
"They do that?" Cyan looked on the verge of tears. "I-is that what happened to-"
"It only ever happens in large battles. Right now, we are momentarily stunted. We are not attacking them and they are not attacking us. Our last large battle was maybe fifteen years ago so don't worry too much over this tactic of war. It won't concern you anytime soon alright?" I cut him off, indirectly answering his question.
"Alright." He nodded.
"Let's take a break now okay? Maybe we could go have lunch together?" I asked, watching as he gathered us his notes and made a point of avoiding my eyes.
"Actually, I have to go see Michellie about something. I'm sorry. Maybe next time." he lied, looking up briefly to see if I bought it.
"Next time for sure Cyan." I clarified as he nodded half-heartedly and trudged from the room. I sighed. Time was moving quickly and soon Cyan's insecurities could be washed away, I reasoned, letting my mind drift back to our tense altercation just a month ago.
I was lying with Cyan on my chest, his gentle breathing changing a bit as he began to stir. As he blinked the sleep from his eyes, he seemed to slowly realize exactly where he was. "Oh." He huffed, rolling off my chest and rubbing his tired eyes awake. I chuckled as a blush slowly crept up his cheek, his mind no doubt remembering everything we had done a few hours earlier.
