As the football season was coming to a close, a reoccurring thought fluttered into your head. It seemed like your husband had been avoiding retirement for years now, but time was catching up with him.
"Bill?" You asked curiously walking into his office.
"Yes?" He swiveled around in his chair and greeted you with a smile.
"We need to talk."
He sighed, he knew this argument was coming, he just didn't know how to win it.
"I don't want to talk about this now." He begged.
"You promised that this would be your last season." You recalled.
He leaned back in his chair, "Gabby, I'll retire next season."
You crossed you arms at his attempt to please you, "You think this is a joke? You're getting too old for this life."
"Look at me Gabby, I'm the picture of health."
You looked at you husband, the years has been kind, but football had not.
"You got four sons out there," you gestured out the living room which was just beyond his office, "Think about them, what do you want to look like at their graduation?"
He put his head in his hands, "Why do have to lay on truth like that?" He asked, almost in defeat.
"You'll be in a wheel chair in 2 years if you keep this up."
He stood up, enraged, "My career has nothing to do with you, or the boys."
You were taken back by his statement, "Every hit you took out there, we took it with you."
He looked up at the ceiling, "I owe the team more, I can't walk away."
"You don't owe them nothing, you played every game with your whole heart, and now it's time for you to move on to the next stage of your life. Nobody plays this game forever, they can't."
He looked at you, locking eyes he silently agreed, "I knew I would have to give it up someday."
"You're not giving it up, you're growing up. Football will always be apart of your life, but don't make it be your whole life."
He smiled and brought you into a tight embrace, "I want to be remembered as more than just some guy who plays football." He confessed.
"And you will be." You assured.
