I'm waking up to ash and dust
I wipe my brow and I sweat my rust
I'm breathing in the chemicals

I'm breaking in, shaping up, then checking out on the prison bus
This is it, the apocalypse
Whoa

Ellie:

"I'm going to remember this when it's time to put you in a nursing home." I snarl at my mom.

"Oh I'm so scared." My mom says sarcastically. Phil chuckles, not saying anything.

"Mom please don't do this." I beg.

I've tried to reason with her, I've tried to run away, I've tried to be a total bitch but none of these tactics are working. She's still sending me to live with my dad and older sister, Bella.
I wouldn't usually resort to begging but desperate times call for desperate measures.

"Mom, I don't even remember Charlie!" I beg, "You're basically forcing me to live with a single, middle-aged man who I don't know! How creepy is that?!"

"Elizabeth Swan, enough!" My mom says, pulling out the first name. She doesn't do that unless she's really tired of me, "Charlie is a good guy. He's excited to have you. Plus Bella needs you right now."

"So let me get this straight, you're uprooting my life because Bella needs me to fix her's?" I ask, "It's going to be so weird! I'm switching schools the middle of sophomore year! I just turned sixteen, you can't do this to me."

"Ellie, this isn't just for Bella, this will be good for you also." My mom says calmly.

"Yes because sending me away from my friends the middle of sophomore year will be great for me! Thanks mom for that enlightenment! I really needed that." I smile sarcastically.

My mom just lets out a sigh.

Renee will claim that she's sending me away because I'm a wild child but we all know it's because she wants to travel the world with Phil. I get that but I'm her kid. Now she's sending me to live with my bio dad who I haven't seen since I was four and my older sister who is seriously messed up. Paradise, right? They live in some crap town that has an almost nonexistent population and it's always foggy.

When we get to the airport, I get out of the car before my parents, "You know what, since you're so eager to get rid of me, I'll just go in by myself. Have fun traveling."

"Bye Ellie, I love you. I know you'll love it there." My mom calls from the car as I walk away. I roll my eyes and keep walking.

Once I get checked in and seated on the plane, I pull out the book I'm reading, Thinner by Stephen King, and start reading. Before I know it, the plane is taking off and I'm stuck on the flying metal death trap for five long hours.
I hate flying with a burning passion. I'm pretty fearless but flying is one of the only things I'm scared off.

I'm bored on the plane so I absentmindedly go through the pictures on my phone. I stop and look at the pictures of my friends and I. We were the group of kids your parents told you not to hang out with. We're not bad, we're not druggies or emo or any of that shit, we're thrill seekers and we do dumb shit sometimes. My sister always lived her life on the sidelines. I'm terrified of that happening to me. Bella aims for safety and security. I aim for being truly happy and free.

After five long hours, my plane lands. I grab my carry-on from the overhead bin and exit the plane.

I'm not actually 100% sure what Charlie looks like. I've only seen a few pictures so I just kind of hang out by the terminal and wait.

"Ellie!" Someone calls.

I turn around and see Charlie holding a sign with my name on it.

"Hey Squirt!" Charlie beams, pulling me into a hug.

"Hey Charlie." I say, awkwardly hugging him back.

Then Charlie realizes how truly awkward this is and tries to make up for it, "So um, how was your flight?"

"It was good." I tell him curtly.

"That's good." He says rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly, "Um, let's go get your bags."

We pick up my bags from the baggage claim and get in the car. The ride would've been short but it was excruciatingly long because of the awkward silence.

"So my friend Billy Black and his son Jacob are coming over for dinner tonight. I'm not sure you remember them. You and Jake used to be close." Charlie says.

"Oh. Cool." I say, not really caring. I don't remember whoever this Jacob guy is and I don't really care.

"Yeah I told Jake that you were coming to live with Bells and I and he said that he would look out for you at school." Charlie says, "You won't be at the same school as Bella, but I figured that was fine because Jake is in your class and you'll already have a friend on your first day of school."

That's just great.

"What school am I going to?" I ask him.

"You'll be going to the La Push high school." Charlie tells me, "It's in the next town over, just a few minutes from Forks. Jake said he would pick you up for school every morning since you don't have your license."

I don't know who this Jake person is or why Charlie has a man-crush on him but I'm already tired of him.

"Okay." I shrug.

We finally get to Charlie's house. It's not a huge house. We walk inside and he gives me a tour.

"Bells is having dinner at her boyfriend's house so it's just you, me, and the Black's tonight, Squirt." Charlie tells me, leading me up the stairs.

"Your room is the attic." Charlie tells me, clearly embarrassed.

"That's actually really cool." I tell him.
I'm not lying. The attic is secluded from the rest of the house, I'll be able to be alone. The only problem is, there's one bathroom and it's downstairs. But that's not that big of a deal.

"Really?" Charlie's face brightens when I say that.

"Yeah." I smile. I have to give Charlie credit. He's really trying to be my dad.

Charlie leads me to the attic. It's nothing special. It's just a room. The walls aren't painted. There's just a dresser, desk, and bed with a girly flower print comforter on top. But I like it... probably because Charlie is really trying.

"It's probably not what you imagined, but you can paint and decorate however you want." Charlie says.

"I really like it. Thanks Charlie." I smile.

Charlie smiles proudly when I thank him,
"No problem Ellie."
