I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own
I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes
Listened as the crowd would sing
Now the old king is dead long live the king
One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand

Ellie:

I'm glad Bella isn't here. Back in Arizona, she was so moody and I'm sure she's still moody.

Since Charlie's friend and his son are coming over, I change out of my airport clothes which consists of grey joggers and a black baggy tshirt... I'm all about being comfortable. I throw my hair into a fishtail braid and put on some black skinny jeans, an oversized grey sweater and some brown knee boots. I hear the doorbell ring about thirty minutes later. I really don't want to meet new people right now so I wait in my room a little bit.

A few minutes later, Charlie calls my name and I head downstairs. I walk into a living room and there's a man in a wheelchair standing with Charlie.

"Ellie, this is Billy." Charlie introduces me, "Billy, this is Ellie."

"Nice to see you again Ellie. It's been a long time." Billy smiles, "I won't ask you if you remember because I know you don't."

I laugh, "Thank you. Nice to meet you."

Then a tall guy with longer hair than mine walks in. Hot damn. He's a cutie.

I look down and try to hide my blush.

"Ellie, this is my son Jacob." Billy says.

"Nice to meet you Jacob." I tell him, looking up and shaking his hand.

"Call me Jake." He corrects me, smiling.

"Billy and I are going to go finish the steaks. Jake, maybe you could get her caught up with school?" Charlie asks.

"Sure thing." Jake says.

Billy and Charlie head outside. I plop on the couch and Jake sits next to me.

"So..." I say awkwardly. He's really cute and I'm not usually awkward but I am right now and I don't know what to do.

"So I guess I'm picking you up for school every morning." He says, trying to ease the awkwardness.

"You really don't have to do that." I tell him, tucking a stray strand of hair behind my ear, "I wouldn't want to take care of the new girl either." I laugh lightly.

"No, no! I really want to." He says, "You can hang out with me and my friends."

"Really? Thanks." I smile.
Go me!

"Jake, Ellie! Time for dinner!" Charlie calls.

Jake and I head to the kitchen and make our plates. I make my plate and sit down farther away from everyone. I'm not anti-social, I just don't want people near me.

Billy and Charlie talk about the most recent football game while Jake and I eat in silence.

"So Charlie," Jake says, "where's Bella?"
His face lights up when he says her name. He's clearly excited to hear about my sister.

"She's with her boyfriend tonight." Charlie mumbles. I don't think Charlie likes the boyfriend.

"Oh." Jake says, his face dropping a little.

Of course he likes Bella. Everyone likes Bella.

"So Ellie," Billy asks, "are you ready for your first day of school on Monday?"

"Um, no." I tell him.

He raises an eyebrow, "Why?"

"Because I'm the new kid. It's not even the beginning of the year, it's October." I tell him, "Everyone has already made their friend groups. I'll be a loner."

"You can hang out with Jake and his friends." Billy says, looking at Jake when he says it.

Jake coughs, "Yeah, of course." He's still clearly upset that Bella isn't going to be joining us.

"You'll be fine Ellie." Charlie says.

I just nod my head, "Well, I'm going to go unpack. Nice meeting you guys." I tell them, getting up from the table and putting my plate in the dishwasher.

"Wait Ellie!" Jake says.

My heartbeat picks up and I turn around, "Yeah?"

"What's your number? I'll text you on Monday. I am picking you up for school, right?" He asks.

"Um yeah, that'd be great." I tell him, putting my number in his phone, "Thanks."

"No problem. I'll see you Monday." He smiles.

"See you Monday." I nod, "Bye Billy."

"Bye Ellie." He nods.

I head back to the attic and start unpacking my shit. I miss my friends already. I've never had a boyfriend. Commitment just isn't something I'm into. I had guys chase me but I just didn't care about them.

But something's different about Jake.

I wonder what Jake thinks about me.
Renee told Charlie that she was sending me here because I was a "wild child"... that's bullshit. Yeah I did dumb stuff but I always made sure that it wasn't around Renee. Who knows what she told Charlie about me. Which means he told Billy because they're best friends.

I change into a sports bra and baggy sweats after taking a shower and putting away some of my clothes in the dresser.

I sigh and climb in bed.
This year is going to suck, I already know it.
