Carob Bob strained to see something in the darkness, that was quickly surrounding him.
He felt his horse stumble slightly.
"Shit," he whispered as he reined the horse in.
"Easy boy."
The horse stopped and Bob patted its neck.
"That's enough for tonight."
He jumped down off the horse and in the feigning light, he unsaddled it.
He tied the horse to a scraggy cactus that was nearby.
He took an apple from his knapsack and gave it to the horse.
It ate hungrily.
"Tomorrow we will find water and some grass for you," Bob assured the horse.
He sat on the ground not far from where the horse was and leaned against a large rock.
He knew there would be no fire tonight.
He just hoped it would not be too cold.
"He still has our daughter."
Bob looked to his left.
Bonnie appeared before him, seemingly glowing in the semi darkness.
"I will get her."
"You couldn't stop him last time, Bob."
Bob took a deep breath.
"I know Bonnie. I know I failed you, but not this time. I will get her back and this time, he will be the one to feel the pain."
He looked at the woman.
"I am sorry I failed you, Bonnie. Failed our daughter."
"You did what you had to do, Bob. The Chief was a good man and he raised her well. She is a strong, beautiful woman."
He had to agree.
"She is."
Bonnie smiled.
"Sleep now, my darling and in the morning find our daughter."
Bob could not fight the sleep anymore and darkness overtook him.
But it was a troubled darkness.
He could see Reaper, standing there, holding his infant daughter.
"One day she will be mine as well, Bob. But for now..."
He tossed the infant to Bob.
Bob could barely see through the tears, but he managed to catch the little girl.
Reaper knelt by the body of Bob's wife, Bonnie.
"But for now, I will take her."
As he spoke he reached into the woman body and pulled out a ghostly image of the woman.
The image screamed as it was drawn to the Reaper.
He pulled her tight to his body and she disappeared into him.
"Why are you doing this?" Bob cried.
"You know why."
Reaper pointed at the infant.
"And one day I will be back for her, as well."
"NO," Bob yelled.
"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO."
He awoke with a start.
The sun was just rising above the horizon.
Bob picked up his saddle.
"You will never have her," he said aloud.
"You will never take anything from me again."
