Carob Bob took the saddle off his tired horse.
"Sorry, my friend. But time is short."
He rubbed the horse's back and side.
"Rest now."
The horse went to some scraggy grass near a small stream that ran from the mountains, far away.
Bob filled his canteens. He knew it might be a while before he came across water again.
He drank heavily from one of the canteens and filled it again.
Then, taking some jerky from his saddlebag, he lay against a rock, near the stream.
He was exhausted.
His mind would not allow him to sleep, with thoughts of what Reaper might be doing to his daughter.
He looked to the stars above him.
"You seek answers from the Spirits?"
Bob never flinched at the sound of the voice.
He was used to having his quiet times invaded by Spirits.
"Will they have answer's for me, Chief?"
"I do not know."
Bob turned to see the Spirit of Chief Damaged Goods standing a few feet from him. He was wearing a full headdress and carrying a spear and tomahawk. Over his back was a bow and quiver of arrows.
"You look like you are on the warpath, Chief."
"My people are gone, Carob. They have been exterminated by Them. Those that still remain are in hiding."
Bob took a deep breath.
He did not want to ask who 'Them' were, but he knew he had to.
"Who, Chief?"
"Those who do the Wraith's bidding."
"Reaper?"
The Chief nodded.
"He has our daughter and he knows of the burial grounds."
"The burial grounds? What would he want with that? The secrets are only known to a few if the legend is right. Ancestors of your people. The Spirits of the Kittana Kattari Indians."
"That is true, but the Spirits have chosen a new Shaman."
Bob stood up and walked toward the Chief.
"Please tell me it is not ..."
The Chief nodded.
"It is Ruechari. The closer she gets to the burial grounds, the more the Spirits will introduce themselves to her. She will not know they are a part of her, but they will be."
"But the Reaper?"
"I believe he knows and that is why he has returned."
Bob looked out across the desert.
"He will have to kill her to get her powers."
It was both a question and a statement.
The Chief's silence was his answer.
"What do we do?"
"My warriors and I will hunt those who serve him. Perhaps we can weaken his powers."
"But I thought ..."
Bob's words were cut off as he turned.
There, behind the Chief, were thousands of Kittana Kattari warriors.
"We are at war."
