Aubree POV
I parked in the driveway and put my head against the steering wheel.I could walk down to school if I wanted, it was only a few blocks away but on certain mornings it'd get cold and lazy so I'd drive.
All I was looking forward to was seeing the ball of energy that was Lucas, my little brother.
His blond curls and bright green eyes were enough to walk faster, Lukie was spontaneous and he could talk your ear off about everything and anything.
He was 9, in fourth grade and he found interest in the slightest of things.
Although I was looking forward to seeing him I wasn't too thrilled for being home. I wished I could go away and take him with me.
I was realistic though and I knew that one day I wouldn't be able to take care of him.
I see him running out towards me, and I smile, this is what home was, Lucas was home.
He came to a halt and jumped into my arms
"Aubree! Today at school I learned about reptiles, they are cold blooded so that means they can't feel many things like when they hurt themselves you know how mom says I don't even feel when I hit myself!? Maybe I'm cold blooded! Also there's a new girl in school and she has weird eyes but good weird not like weird Eugene you know that boy that's in my class! Jack got hit in the face with a baseball today and I had to run and-"
I had to cut him off
"Whoa whoa whoa Lukie, breathe! Let's walk into the house first and you can tell me all about your interesting day"
I laughed and started walking towards the door, meanwhile he kept talking my ear off while I hummed in response.
My mom was in the kitchen and I yelled a quick hi before running up the stairs towards Lukies room to play with him and listen to him talk, he was my saving grace in this shit hole.
There used to be another source of happiness but he was long gone and there wasn't a day i didnt miss him.
