The next morning arrived with a slight throbbing at the back of my skull that mocked me for having one too many glasses of wine. I haven’t seen Elmo for three days since that party. Pshh. Nothing’s new to his absence.
After a long, hot shower, I made my way into the living room. With my much-needed dose of caffeine wrapped between both palms I headed to the kitchen and filled the biggest mug I could find then slump my body on the couch. I startled when the phone vibrated against me, nearly dropping it. I debating letting it go to voice mail but when I see Alice on the screen I set my mug on the coffee table and picked up my phone.
“Alice..” I adjusted my grip on the phone and tucked my legs beneath me on the couch and leaned into the corner.
“all settled Lo...Next week na flight nyo ni Sir Elmo.. I’ll just email the whole info” I smiled widely hearing the great news.
“Thank you Alice.. I really owe you a lot.”
“Pshhh.. you have no idea how I hate to this...Mawawalan na ako ng trabaho..”
“haha you bet I will leave you behind? I’ll take care of that..”
“All right.. all right.. ”
“Uhm.. Alice.. Have you mentioned this to Elmo?” I hope not.
“Hindi pa naman.. ”
“Ohw. Great.. ako na lang magsasabi sa kanya..” After we hung up, I stared at the phone for a long minutes, as I smiled to myself things were going well in my side. I chuckled inwardly. Just the thought of that conversation made me ecstatic.
The door slid apart revealing Elmo talking over to his phone. His eyes were dark; periodically his eyelids would droop downwards looking like he’s half asleep. His clothes, while expensive looked less than impressive; his suit was creased and his tie was loosened halfway down his chest. His hair was unkempt and ruffled, resembling a birds-nest. He looks miserable. His gaze darkened and his voice lowered intimately.
“I’ll call you back.” He whispered over the phone.
“I’m glad you decided to see me.” I blurted sarcastically.
“In your dreams Lo..I’m not here to see you..” I was a bit hurt but I maintained my cool. I saw him heading upstairs.
“Next week na flight natin..”He face me then he looked at me with too much disgust.
“Walang aalis..” His face was hard and his gaze narrowed and determined. It almost choked me seeing it.
“Come on Elmo... It’s all settled..”
“Look Lo.. I can’t come with you..”
“why not... If it’s about your company.. you can sell it.. I’m sure...”
“What? Do you actually hear yourself?... I worked hard through the years.. then you just dictate me to sell it.. Hell no..”
“We can start another one there Moe..My dad would love to help us.”
“The answer is No...” his voice was stern.
“Damn it Elmo..I’m willing to forget about Julie....just come with me.. the sooner we work this out the better.. Mas madali tayong makamove on if we are there.” He faced me then, turning in a leisurely pivot, that ghost of a smile softening his sinful mouth.
“What do you think we’re going to work out? Wala na Lo...”
“You can go Lo.. Hindi kita pipigilan... But I’m staying here..” he continued
