The sun had shone so brightly that morning but there was no sign of it now. The seemingly sudden darkening as though a curtain has been pulled across the sky. Everything looked grey, the slow drips of rain that had seemed so innocent had grown in size and speed, until finally a steady torrent as the clouds above released their burden. But nothing in the world could have prepared me for what happened next ..my car stopped.
“What the... Great..just great..” I cursed. I should’ve used this car.
I searched for my phone and call Macqui.
“Hey. It’s me Macqui..I’m sorry I’m kinda busy right now. Just leaved a message after the beep” I called thrice but all I can get is this freaking answering machine.
“Macqui si Julie to.. I need your help. My tires are flat and I’m stranded in the middle of nowhere..Please Macqui call me if you got this. ”
I opened my car door and walk outside. There's a chill in the air and I was instantly drenched by this freaking heavy rain, the thunder rolls across the sky as if someone was bowling on the top of the clouds. Then I saw my two flat tires. I sighed. I don’t know about cars..engine.. tires whatever is that.
I look at the street light, and it reveals the rain in the darkness. I glance around hoping to see any sign that would help me fix my car. Crap. Ancient pine trees stand like sentries on either side as far as the eye can see. No people.. No house.. No vehicle. Great I’m alone in here. Fuck my boss for sending me here. The wind had become so strong it feels like icy fingertips encasing me in a vice like grip. The cold air seeps through my pores with web like precision. I went inside the car cos I’m soaked and my body is trembling from the cold wind.
The rain drummed on the windshield. I pressed my fingers deeper into the steering wheel, finding comfort in the familiarity of the warm grooves. It didn't block out the noise though. It was like a thousand soldiers marching on the car roof that could cave in at any time.
Pulling my thin black coat around my shoulders, I still shivered. After a while it feels like being stabbed with thousands of needles that only penetrate the first two layers of my skin. That feeling fades when the cold gets worse, into a foreboding kind of numbness. At that point all of my extremities feel swollen, clumsy, stiff and useless, as though there's been a layer of water pumped under my skin that dulls the sensation of touch. So... stinging numb..
I should’ve call Sam but he’s out of town. Before Sam leaved he called me and asked to stay away from Elmo. I agreed but not.. Fuck..I have to do this. My only hoped is Elmo. I’m sorry Sam.. I searched for my phone with my trembling hand and dialled his number.
“Hello?” The velvet rasp of Elmo’s voice flooded me with such relief.
“Thank God.. Elmo.. I need your help.”
***********
Leaving the room behind me, I took the hallway to the living room. I paused on the threshold, my gaze riveted to Elmo’s back as he stood in front of the windows and looked out at the street. My heart rate kicked up. His reflection revealed a thoughtful mood. His gaze was unfocused and his mouth grim. His crossed arms betrayed an inherent unease, as if he was out of his element. He looked remote and removed, a man who was inherently alone.
He sensed my presence or maybe he felt my longing. Huh? Shut up Julie He pivoted; then went very still. I took the opportunity to drink him in, my gaze sliding all over him. He looked every inch the powerful magnate.
Christ. My brain couldn’t wrap itself around that fact, the irrefutable evidence of how uniquely beautiful he was. So sensually handsome my eyes burned just from looking at him. The rakish fall of black hair around his face made my fingers flex with the urge to touch it. And the way he looked at me…my pulse leaped.
