dear mom,

if i had a daughter, i would name her lily

blooming once a year

a burst of color--

the embodiment of light and purity on the outside

full of vibrancy and hues rich with complexity on the inside

just like her

on the day she's born, i'll plant bulbs in the garden

in front of the white picket fence house i always dreamed of

every birthday a reminder of her beauty

a reflection of who she is on such a grand scale that no mirror could do justice

but, most important of all

i would be her sun

giving her warmth even on cloudy days

my rays of sunshine always saving her from the depths of the shadows

and into the light of the blue, so blue sky that spoke to her of hope

a staircase to the heavens

and my husband would be the rain

washing away her tears, rejuvenating her

splashing her with the opportunity to cleanse her pain

his droplets hugging her petals and leaves

nurturing her to grow despite the odds

you-

you would be the night

striking fear with your eternal darkness

or a weed

your vines twisting her faith that the sun would rise up again that morning

or the winter

your icy cold freezing her will, killing her spirit with the chill of a single breath

i know this from experience

for my tree was ripped from the roots of its foundation in the soft soil

but, you see, the thing about lilies

despite the cruelty of the night, the weeds, and the winter

is that they emerge again

yours truly,

evelyn

A/N:

Hello, I'm Kiana!

Firstly, thank you so much for reading :)

It makes me so happy that you gave my writing a shot. I've never really done poetry before, so I apologize if it's awful. I don't know anything about the beats or rhyme schemes. I really do love poetry though, and I'm hoping that through doing this story I'll get better. Wattpad seems like the perfect place to experiment because it's such a positive community. No matter how much of a beginner you are there's always a reader out there who will love your writing, and support you.

This chapter was inspired by the poem "If I had a daughter" by the amazing spoken word poet Sarah Kays. If you don't know who she is, you should definitely check her out.

So, yeah. I don't really know what this is yet. No plan, no outline, nothing. Just a spark of an idea. I don't know if I'll stick with the poems, turn into a dialogue thing, or a more formal letter format than this. I'll try my best to not delete this story (*cringes thinking of previous stories*), even though I'm awful at commitment. I hope you stick around so both of us can see what this becomes together.

Any and all feedback is appreciated!

Also, don't copy. I could put all of the boring copyright things here, but you know the deal. It's called plagiarism, and it's against the law. If you do copy me, I'll be really upset (also kind of flattered, but that's not the point). Besides, you could come up with a much better story than this with your imagination--I believe in you. So, don't. Write your own.

Don't forget to vote, comment, and follow, okay?

Love,

Kiana
