Believing in yourself is a hard thing to do when people constantly throw stones in your way. Whatever you think turned out just fine later reveals itself as a disaster. Humans are social animals, we need someone to talk to, someone to run to. If we don't have such a person in our life, we're lost and thrown into a pit filled with hungry lions, tearing at your flesh. Our society is nothing else but hell. Either you are a part of the popular kids or you aren't. There is no in between. Sometimes you could instantly make out the person who was going to be bullied, because they looked like nerds or because they were small. Sometimes they had annoying laughs or high pitched voices like my own. I won't say that it was right for bullies to pick out those already weak people, but it wasn't right either that they took their anger out on a guy, who barely entered the facility. New ones never had an easy start, not even when they came by with their friends. I know that because when I first started here, at this college, I was a looser and a geek. Out of all subjects, theater and music were my favourites and I never intended to change that passion, I chose those. However bullies who picked sports thought otherwise and for the first year I was sometimes beaten which, in comparison to someone else, wasn't that bad. My friends took care of me and I soon realized that I was getting stronger. I started to believe in myself, sang loudly on stage with confidence radiating from me. Kirstie, Scott and Kevin were those who showed me how to stand up for myself and I'm still grateful for that. If you would see me walking around on campus you were more likely to see my friends as well. Scott, Kirstie and I were 20 years old, while Kevin was two years older. Our bond was the strongest in college and many students admired us. Not even the bullies approached us anymore since they knew that Scott and Kevin were taller and most likely stronger than them. We were the first ones to know if a new student transferred to this facility, because they were often sent to us so we could take them under our wing and protect them.

This year though turned out to be different. The four of us were heading towards the main entrance of our college to leave when we stopped and saw someone new. Someone who hasn't been send to us for whatever reasons. There was a guy standing at his locker at the end of the hallway, all alone with no friends. He was wearing nothing but ragged clothing, holes in his pants were his knees were, and an old beanie on his head, covering his long brown hair. He had a trimmed beard and his face was pale and slightly bony. Even from a distance I could see the sad look in his eyes as he stuffed his books inside the locker, before picking up a broken backpack. As he leaned down we, my friends and I, could see his spine digging through the thin fabric of his pullover and I could hear Kirstie gasp. Winter was not the right season to not wear a jacket and a scarf. I noticed his thin frame, the stick like arms as he digged through his backpack to make sure he had everything he needed. He straightened his back and closed the locker, staring at it for a while, pulling up his trousers which were slightly falling from his small waist. The young man was surely underweight and his skin was so pale as if he had never seen the sunlight. I slightly tapped Scott and Kirstie, who stood right next to me, and we walked slowly towards him, the guy we've never seen before. Just a few feet away from him he seemed to notice us as his head turned towards me and the others and his eyes widened in fear. Such a beautiful shade of emerald green... Even though he was thin, even though he looked like he hadn't eaten in days and I saw a cut on his lip, I noticed how beautiful he truly was. Without giving us the chance to say something he quickly backed away , stormed out of the building and into the cold winter air, hitting his nearly uncovered body.
