Chapter 16

Jakes P.O.V.

I glanced over at Amanda, sleeping in the passengers seat. I silently sighed to myslef and bit the corner of my lip. I shook my head and smirked at how she quietly snored next to me. She was so sweet, so innocent. How did I get so lucky?

I focused again on the road.We had to get home before sundown. I'm not supposed to drive at night anymore. Not after what happened.

5 MONTHS EARLIER

"Jake, you're doing great." mom smiled at me. I grinned. My dad and little sister Lilly sat in the backseat.

"Red light." Lilly called out to me.

I chuckled. "I know, backseat driver." I said as I slowed down. We talked for a few seconds before the light turned green. I started driving again, laughing with my family.

The next thing I remember was lying on the ground, barely breathing, and seeing Lilly on the ground screaming next to my parents who were on the ground surronded by broken glass and blood, dead.

All I could think was "This is all my fault. This is all my fault. My fault..."

Police sirens were heard, but I couldn't think straight. My parents were dead. Were would I go? How did this even happen?

"Son, I'm afraid you were hit by a drunk driver." I looked up and saw a policeman standing in front of me. I began to scream and cry like a child who lost their doll.

But I lost something much more valuable.

My parents were gone.

I was a parentless child.

How are me and Lilly going to make it through?

Who are going to be our parents?

I held my 8 year old sister in my arms, as she cried and screamed. "It's ok its ok its ok." I said to her, trying to calm her down, but it seemed it was hard to convince me too.

"Do you have any close relatives that could take care of you?". A police woman asked me. "Aunts and Uncles?". I nodded.

"Can you give me there names and numbers so we're able to contact them? They will have to take care of you for now, ok?" I nodded again.

Oh my god. How did this happen so fast?

I wiped a tear from my cheek and kept driving. But soon one tear turned into me pulling over onto the side of the road and sobbing. I missed my parents so much. My aunt and uncle were great, they really were. And I still had Lilly. And now, I have Amanda. Things are going to get better. I'll marry Amanda and start a family with her. It will be ok. Right?

"Jake?" Amanda whispered, still half asleep. "Are you ok?" she asked. I shot up and quickly wiped away my tears. I bit my lip and nodded my head. I fixed my beanie too, god I probably looked a mess.

"What's wrong?" she asked.

"Nothing babe." I smiled. I kissed her forehead gently and started the car again. I pulled back onto the road and began driving. "Go back to sleep." I said, and laced our fingers together.

"Okay.." she said, sounding unsure. In a few mintues she was asleep again. I turned the radio on low and hummed to Collide by Howie Day.

"Even the best fall down sometimes. Even the wrong words seem too right. Out of the doubt that fills my mind, I somehow find, you and I, collide... ". I sang softly. Now the only thing I could think about was Amanda. She changed my life, and now everythings going to be ok.

Everythings going to be ok.

"Baby wake up." I whispered to Amanda as we pulled into her house driveway. She didn't budge, just groaned a little and shut her eyes tighter. "Babe, we're here. Wake up.". Nothing. "Amanda." She turned over so her back was facing me. I leaned over and kissed her forehead, then up and down her neck. "Wake up, Sleeping Beauty.".

"But I don't wanna." she whined like a five year old.

"If you wake up then when we get inside we can cuddle and watch any movie you want...".

She shot up and scattered to get everything together and raced out of the car. I could faintly hear her yelling at her mom to quickly open up the door.

"Typical Amanda.." I whispered to myself and shaking my head. I got out and grabbed all of our bags and went inside. Just as everyone stepped inside, it began pouring outside.

I walked up the stairs to Amanda's room and opened the door. She was sprawled out on the bed, face down.

"Amanda, what are you doing?" I chuckled. I put the bags down and walked over to her. I sat down on the bed. I rubbed her back as she started talking.

"I missed my bed." she said, but it was a little muffled since her face was still in between the pillows.

"Amanda, we were only gone for a day, you realize that right?". I laughed. She turned over and glared at me. I just smiled back at her. She just shook her head and got off the bed to look at movies.

"What do you wanna watch?" she asked?

"I don't care, just not a chick flick.." I replied. She nodded and started searching for a movie.

"What about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? The old one." she asked. I didn't really have a choice since she was already inserting the disc. I replied anyway.

"Sounds fun". She climbed into bed with me and layed her head on my chest. The movie started and I played with her hair. " Hey Amanda?"

"Yeah?" she asked.

"I love you." I said. She looked up at me and said four words that never failed to make me smile.

"I love you, too." she said . And I could see in her eyes that she meant it.
