Just as May was about to attempt to find Iris for Darius her own Alpha came out of the office behind them.
“Ah May just the wolf I wanted to see! You need to go for a check-up with the pack doctor, nothing major it’s just about mating since you’ve yet to complete the process.” He smiled at a puzzled May. She hadn’t heard of anyone going to visit the pack doctor about mating before that topic was usually always covered by your parents but why would anybody ever tell their friends about how they had to go through the awkward mating sex talk with the doctor as well as their parents.
After May told Darius that she would get Iris to meet him later she strolled down the hall and knocked cautiously on the pack doctor’s white door.
“Come in.”
May twisted the door handle and poked her head through the gap, still nervous about entering the room.
“Ah May just the wolf I wanted to see!”
“Erm yeah about that I was wondering why you wanted to see me about mating because I think my mum covered the bases with that…?”
“I’m sure she did but you see May you’re a special case most wolves when they meet a match from the website they spend time with them and fall in love with them whereas you don’t seem particularly interested in your mate.”
“It’s not that I’m not interested in him it’s just there’s no connection no spark I guess I’m just disappointed that it’s not like how I thought it’d be so I’m just a bit disappointed is all.” She sighed as she finished unloading something that’d been plaguing her for a few months.
“That’s perfectly normal May you’ve made a new friend not found a mate that’s all. You see you find your mate by spending time with them you can have more than one potential mate you see a mate isn’t exactly a soul mate as most believe, as nobody knows if they’re with their soul mate or not; not even a wolf.
“You already know how humans work they get in and out relationships -usually monogamous ones- until they find someone they want to spend time with. Whereas wolves desire to have a physically strong mate to help produce strong offspring, they want the power that comes with being with a strong mate that’s why when they have an interest they react in a volatile manner to determine whether the possible mate is worthy.
“Being a wolf shifter means that you’re a mix of what a wolf wants and what a human wants. Even unintentionally you will automatically cast off any potential mate if they come across as weak it’s not that you’re shallow it’s that you’re part wolf to a wolf it is survival of the fittest.
“Everyone’s different some react more like a wolf would some more like a human. But from what you’ve said you don’t currently have a potential mate.
“The website doesn’t find your mate it finds a potential mate with similar characteristics to you. It doesn’t always work because obviously the human side can be picky about things just as the wolf side it’s not like a split personality just a mix between a wolf and a human’s preference in partner. The website wasn’t created to find your mate for you it was designed to help you find your mate; the rest is up to you.” The doctor concluded his long speech while May sat wide eyed letting this information sink in.
“Wow that’s a lot to think about thanks Doc.” May hastily rose from the chair she sat in earlier when she realised this meeting was going to take a long time conscious that Iris didn’t know she had a potential mate nearby and that he didn’t know that Iris didn’t make that webpage.
“Wait May, there’s something else you need to relax a bit more Iris is rather worried about your recent behaviour, now I think most of this was due to your mating predicament don’t worry I’ll speak to him he probably feels the same. But I think it’d help if you go for a run in wolf form as it doesn’t sound like you have in a while since I know Iris doesn’t run frequently.”
She suppressed a sigh as she nodded it had been a while since she had let loose in her wolf form. As she walked down the corridor to go outside she bumped into Iris by the kitchen.
“I’m sorry May you were just being so overbearing and I shouldn’t have gone behind your back and I shouldn’t have gone without you and I should’ve just told you. I’m so sorry but no matter what’s wrong with you I’ll support you, I’m so sorry!” Iris hugged May while her tears dripped on to her top. It was another reason to envy Iris, even when she cried she looked beautiful she never snorted or had a runny nose she always looked sweet and innocent it made you feel like you should drop everything to protect her. May sighed hugging her friend back.
“No I’m sorry Iris but it’s ok now, I’m fine I just need a run and hey guess what I don’t have a mate either now so we’re single sisters again!” At Iris’s confused look May explained to her what the doctor had said and Iris nodded in understanding.
Iris joined May on her run until they both came to a clearing. May had finally decided to tell Iris what was really making her over protective. She thought through what she was going to say to Iris. As they got to the clearing Iris flopped down on to the ground she wasn’t the sportiest at the best of times she was more of an indoor kind of girl. May sat next to Iris’s heaving furry form waiting for her panting to stop. Iris had a white face that changed to a dark grey further down her body blending perfectly with a flawless transition from white to grey. May was a medium brown wolf with a golden mask and golden underbelly, chest and legs.
The wolf watching them switched into human form stumbling clumsily as he put on some shorts. He hadn’t been in his human form for a while but this was his opportunity they had finally come to a secluded spot in the woods. As he stumbled he snapped a twig alerting the girls to his presence but while the white and grey one was too tired to care the brown and gold one stood alert with her ears outward and forwards and her brow furrowed while her eyes looked feral. Her nose puckered and lips moved to show her sharp fangs barred ready for action. Her hackles were raised as she lowered to crouch ready to attack whatever made the twig break.
The stranger stared at her then to the other wolf and back again. The one laying down was the one he was supposed to bring back for the Alpha but the brown one seemed more intelligent, a better match to his alpha than the one who didn’t detect the threat or maybe her not caring was her showing her strength that she thought she could take down a threat even with her back turned. He would take both to his Alpha he decided; the other can just be somebody else’s problem. The stranger stepped out from the tree he hid behind a hundred metres from the clearing and cleared his throat to get their attention before he spoke.
