Chapter twenty one - Laying There Like Stone

*Faith pov*

Something caught my eye under the bed. Empty pill bottles. Mom's book slipped out of my hands. I don't want to believe what I'm thinking. I looked over to mom and her glossy eyes were staring right at me, her face white as a ghost.

"Mommy?" Mom didn't move. She laid there like stone. A rock that hasn't been moved in ages. "Mom?" I stood up, tears starting to roll down my cheeks so fast. "Mom!" I shook her shoulder, and she just rolled over from the push, looking up at the ceiling. "Mom, Mom, Mom!" I brushed her hair and cupped her face. She's cold like she's been sitting here for a while. I rested my head on her shoulder and bawled.

No, no, no.

"Mommy, please." I whispered. I went into shock. It was like I stopped crying then stood up. I backed up, staring at the body laying on mom's bed. I tripped over my own two feet and fell to the floor. I hugged my knee's not bothering to get up.

This is a dream. This is a very realistic dream. Any second now I'll wake up and just cry in to Josh's arms. He'll say it's just a dream and that everything's ok. When I wake up the next morning, I'll go home and Josh will meet mom and everything will be ok.

Nope. I didn't wake up and I don't think I will from this nightmare.

I want to call for Josh but nothing's going out from the hole in my face.

This is a trick. This is a very mean trick. That's a dummy. That's a very realistic dummy and mom will come in and laugh, I'll tell her how she's mean and she'll say sorry so many times.

I looked up to mom and she didn't move at all. Her stomach isn't moving, showing she's breathing. That just made me cry harder. I covered my ears and dug my finger tips into my skull.

"It's a dream." I whispered to myself. "It's a dream, it's a dream..."

I heard the front door open downstairs but I didn't move. I couldn't make a sound come out of me.

"Hello?" Josh called. "Faith?" He came upstairs and looked in my mom's room. He saw me and came over to me quickly, cupping one side of my face, not even realizing the body on the bed. "Faith, what happened?" I couldn't speak, I couldn't say anything but I just looked over to mom, wishing she would just sit up of roll over or anything. Josh looked over to her. "Oh my god." He whispered then went over to her. He came back after a quick second. "Faith, you have to get up." He told me. I looked into his eyes and shook my head slightly. "Yes." Josh picked me up and I hid my face in his chest. He brought me outside and sat my down on the front step. Josh lifted my chin, making me look at him. His eyes are red, holding back some of his tears that wanted to come.

"I thought she was sleeping." I managed to say. Josh wrapped his arms around me and I curled in his chest and cried. I cried so hard that it's unbelievable.

She's gone. Forever. I'll never see her again. I have no one to say 'I love you' to.

I looked at Josh and he pecked my lips, tears almost streaming down his face.

"Faith, it's ok."

"No, it's not!" I said, finally speaking. "It's not ok! Mom's upstairs and she's-" I choked on my words. "-she's dead! Josh, she's dead! Is that even my mom up there!?" Josh stayed there, letting me scream and let it out, knowing that's what I need. "She's never coming back! I'm so confused and I don't know what to do!" Josh waited a second, seeing if I was done.
