Consequences

"Chara?"

"Hm?"

"Do you even want to be here?" - the psychologist asked. Jessica Parker was the only psychologist of the small village in which Chara lived. 4 years ago he had his first appointment at Jessica's clinic. He had suffered from traumatic experiences which he continuously refused to talk about until the present day. He acted and talked like an adult though he was just 8.

"Of course, Jessy, you know how much I love talking to you." - Chara said with a sarcastic tone while crossing his legs on the couch he was sitting on. He was eating a chocolate bar.

"You're really a pain, you know that?" - Jessica said humorously.

"Yeah, I know." - Chara replied in a sassy way. It wasn't a complete lie though, Chara really liked being in Jessica's clinic. Like he himself said, it was "the only place he could have an intelligent conversation" implying that everywhere else he was surrounded by idiots.Jessica always advised him not to think like this about other people and to have an open mind, to make new friends. He mostly ignored this advise or responded with an unenthusiastic "meh".The orphanage he lived in was in a mediocre state. The caretakers were fanatic religious who seemed to never have had a childhood. They punished the children in every horrible way imaginable if they happened to disobey the rules. There were dire consequences even for accidents or childlike behavior (?). Chara was still clumsy and childlike when he entered the orphanage 4 years ago, but that was normal, every child gets food on their clothes, bumps into things or does stupid things out of curiosity. But there were consequences even for this. No teaching, just consequences. Every child reacted differently to the caretakers brutal "care taking". With time Chara began to act like an adult, to talk, walk and eat like one. He never behaved childlike again because the circumstances demanded him not to so. The food they served at the orphanage was disgusting, they rarely had meat or vegetables, only industrial rice, beans and pasta. They made the food in a very lazy and unprofessional way and served them. Real quality food Chara would only eat at his school. But he had to eat the garbage they fed him in the orphanage anyway. In the beginning he cried a lot and couldn't eat almost anything but the caretakers would beat him until he'd finished. He got somewhat used to it nowadays. The leader caretaker, which Chara fondly referred to as "fat old hag", would always pass by him while he was eating. She would always ask him with a sadistic smile "How's the meal?" to which he would answer "Just like the birthmark on your face. It's disgusting but I can't face away." Chara thought the beat up he'd get from that was worth it. An answer like this costed him more than 10 painful hits with belts made of steel. But he got used to it.

"Chara, I should really call the police. I can't take seeing you with these injures all over your body. They can't treat you like this."  - Jessica said worried.

"Do you think the police is gonna do anything? We tried to call them like 10 times. Mostly they don't even pick up and if they do they laugh and tell us to stop the prank calls." - Chara said hopeless. And he was right. He and some other children tried to reach out to the police to no avail. The telephone was in one of the caretakers office, so it was risky too. Once the children got caught using the phone and the consequences were dire. Everyone had to take their clothes off and had to take many hits with the belt. Most of the things in this village were of a low quality like public institutions and the security system for the citizens. The exceptions being Chara's school and the hospital. Jessica, the only psychologist of the village, didn't even live there, she lived in a city nearby, but she came to the village everyday to work. She wanted to make a difference.

"Well, then I'll have a serious talk with your caretakers... "

"Please don't." - Chara interrupted her.  " If you talk to them they won't let me come here anymore and I would hate to spend more hours of my day in this madhouse. Not to mention that they'd punish me. I'll figure this out, I'll get out of there eventually, I won't be a child forever. The books there are pretty good. They help me pass the time there." - Chara said insisting on not doing anything that would have "consequences". He had enough of those.

"Fine then."- Jessica replied discontented, but she recognized that it was better not to take any wrong step.

"This situation is terrible for your mental and emotional development. I'm surprised on how you can handle it so easily. Not that you should be able to handle it. You need room to breathe and home that is healthy for you. But until then, you know that I'm always here for you, Chara. You can tell me everything. I'm not just a psychologist that wants her work done, I'm your friend and I'm gonna help you."- she said with a patient smile.

"I know I can count on you, Jessy." - Chara smiled in response.
