"How was the funeral?"
"It was good. The family really appreciated us coming."
"People sad, mommy."
"Yes, honey. Today is a very sad day."
"Hey kids, why don't you go get yourself something from the vending machine down the hall?"
"Yeah!"
"How is she?"
There was a sigh. "No improvement. Doctors are concerned that...that....she'll..."
There was a stifled sob.
"It's alright, it's alright," a soothing voice comforted. "We need to keep hope, okay? It's all we have."
A staggered breath. "Okay."
Silence. A machine beeped steadily in the background.
"Let's pray."
***
A squeaking of wheels.
A hushed voice.
A cry of anguish down the hall.
A fear of death.
This is how I spent my...days? Weeks? I don't know.
All I know is that I want to wake up.
Wake up.
Wake up.
Wake up.
***
My eyes flash open.
I lay there, blinking. I hear the running of a faucet, then the opening of a door.
"Oh my gosh, Kylee!!"
I am engulfed by a warm embrace as my mother's arms wrap around me. The door opens and my father comes in. He joins the hug with tears and a smile.
Eventually, my parents release me. "I'm so glad you're awake, Kylee," my mom says, brushing hair from my face. "We were so worried."
"What are you talking about?"
They blink. "You were in a accident, honey."
Then it all comes back to me. The screaming, the pain, the deadly silence.
I look up at my mom. "Hayden?"
"He's going to be okay. You saved his life. They say that right before impact you must've swerved the car so that you would get the direct hit, not Hayden."
Relief floods my veins. "Oh, good," I say weakly.
I catch Dad giving Mom a side glance. "What?" I ask.
"Kylee, you got really hurt in the accident," Dad started. "Your legs were crushed. The doctors were able to restore most of of your mobility...but you'll have to use crutches the rest of your life."
Tears gathered in my eyes.
"You'll never be able to walk normally again."
