The next day, everything went smoothly and normal.
I wish.
It started out innocent enough. I got up, showered, got dressed, put on makeup, ate breakfast and then went to school. Morning classes went by normally. I saw friends, smiled at strangers and basically was myself.
Then lunch came.
Once the bell rang, the teens flooded the hallways. I weaved in between them and found my way to the green, a small area full of grass and a fountain. I sat down under a tree and pulled out my sandwich, waiting for Rosie.
About two seconds later, I saw Rosie coming. Today she had on a flowy pink sun dress and sandals. She looked cute as ever.
"Hey, Brylee," she said with a smile as she sat down across from me. I rolled my eyes. "Hey Rosie. What's up?"
"Nothing much. My day has been tragically boring. Listening to lecture in Bryant's, pop quiz in Adam's, it's terribly bland," she sighed dramatically.
I giggled. "Fun. You look cute today."
"Thanks! I got this dress for only $15 at the thrift store. $15!!! And it's like totally modest and cute! It was made for me. You look nice today, too," Rosie said, waving her hand at my attire. Band tee, green high tops, shorts. The basics.
"Um, thanks?" I giggled again.
"Wow, you're really giggly today. Did a certain someone say hi to you today?" Rosie wiggled her eye brows.
"Huh? Who? Braxton? No...I told you! I just tutor him because he can't think on his own."
"Ooo, harsh and defensive. A little too defensive, actually. I'm telling you, Kylee, he tot-"
She froze and stared behind me, her mouth wide open. "What is it..." I ask, turning around.
There I saw Braxton and 6 other protein shake-guzzling bears walking over to us. Not on the sidewalk in front of us, but across the grass to us.
I quickly whipped my head back around and tried to wipe the look of terror on my face. "Rosie," I hissed. "Stop. Staring."
"Uh, Kerry?" I heard Braxton say behind me. I turned to him, my face blank.
"I'm not going to be at tutoring today." His voice was full of arrogance.
"Why not?" I asked.
"I have, uh, some other business to take care of," he said, his buddies snickering behind him.
I was quiet for a moment before saying, "Well, tell your other business that you're not free tonight. You need to be there today, on time."
There was an awkward silence.
"What?" Braxton asked, confused.
I sighed. "I said to tell her that you're busy. Your education is more important than your pervish desires."
The bears laughed while Braxton's face turned red. "I didn't say it was with a girl or anything," he accused.
"You didn't have too," I replied. "Your reputation says it for you."
The bell rang, so I grabbed my bag and Rosie's hand and went to class.
***
That afternoon, I sat in the library doing homework. There was a crash of the door opening and then a thud as someone sat down with much force in front of me. Without looking up, I slid a copy of Romeo and Juliet across the table.
"Your teacher wants you to read this since you never did in freshman year. I'll help you through the first chapter and help you fill out the questions after, but then you'll be on your own. Okay?" I looked up.
"Fine," Braxton said, his voice harsh.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
He just glared at me.
"Um...okay. Let's start."
***
By the end of the session, we were nowhere. Braxton refused to read and just kept giving me the death glare.
"Dude, what is your problem?" I finally asked.
After a minute of expected slince, Brash snapped.
"What's my problem? You're my problem. You're annoying and stupid and stuck up. You think you're better than everyone else, and you think you can just boss everyone around like you f-ing own the place."His voice got louder and louder until he was shouting in the library in my face.
I, Kylee Rex, was being insulted by the biggest player and bully in high volume in a library.
"Are you done?" I asked quietly.
He just glared at me. Finally he said, "All you Mormons are the same. Weird, stuck up freaks who don't belong."
Now, here's the thing. You can insult me all you want, I don't really care. But the minute you start with the church....
It's a different story.
"You listen here, Braxton Shaw. We are not all the same. Were all different, unique children of our Heavenly Father. Do NOT ever insult the church like that ever again. Do you understand? It's very special to me," my voice a deadly calm.
Braxton just stood up and left.
He just left.
With out even apologizing! The nerve. I'll have to talk to him tomorrow.
Sighing, I pushed all of my stuff in my bag.
"Kylee."
I turned around to see Eli standing there, his hands in his pockets.
"Hi, Eli."
"Hey," he came over and sat down next to me, where Braxton was sitting minutes before.
"Sorry you had to hear that, Eli," I said.
He waved it off. "It's alright. I just wanted to tell you to go easy on him."
"Easy?"
"Yeah. He isn't as macho as he seems, and sometimes he really hurts. You have a real influence on this school, and you could easily destroy his reputation."
I raised my eyebrows. "Me? Influence?"
"You know what I mean. You're different than everyone else in this school somehow. People respect you."
Really? Hm...
"Okay. Thanks." I glanced down at my hands. "I guess I wasn't too nice to Braxton."
Eli shrugged. "Maybe. But heaven knows he sometimes deserves it."
I giggled.
"I'll see you around, okay?" Eli asked, getting up.
"Alright. See you."
