Dean sits in the apartment, his phone pressed to his ear. It's been awhile since he's heard her voice. When she doesn't answer, though, an overwhelming anger washes over him.
Ever since he discovered that Emma and Michael had run off with each other, he's had several mixed feelings. First, he was pissed because she had run off. Again. And when he found out it was with Michael, it just made him angrier.
The kid should know better. Instead, he probably let his feelings for her get in the way of thinking rationally. Now they're out in California do God knows what.
This only upset Dean further. Even though it's not really any of his business, she is an adult after all. But the thought of someone touching his little girl like that makes him sick. He can't help but feel the strong desire to punch Michael and tell him not to touch her.
Then, he was sad. And he felt betrayed. He thought they had their moment, that they talked through it. Sammy and Derek said she looked like she was doing fine that morning she left. Why did she have to run off like that? She's his little girl. How the hell is he supposed to protect her now?
"You okay?" Sammy says, entering the living room.
Dean sighs. "Yeah. I'm fine."
"Derek and Carter are almost done packing things up. We should be getting on the road soon," his brother says.
"What if she doesn't come back?" Dean asks, his eyes beginning to burn with tears.
Sammy walks over and sits next to his older brother. "Hey," he says. "She will. She just needs to figure some things out. She was overwhelmed by everything and just needed a break. She'll come back."
"But what if she doesn't, Sammy? I promised I would keep her safe. That I would protect her. How can I protect her if she's in a different part of the country every Tuesday? If she's in trouble, there's no way in Hell I can get to her in time."
"She'll be fine," Sammy says. "She's with Michael. He'll keep her safe."
Dean wipes angrily at the tears on his face. "I know," he says. "I just can't help but feel responsible if anything happens to her."
Sammy stands up and reaches his hand out to Dean. "She'll be fine. Don't worry about her."
Dean sighs and takes his brothers hand. "I'm her father, Sammy. I can't help but worry about her."
Sam smiles. "And you're an amazing father for that," he says. "But right now we need to be getting back to Bobby's. Those demons are on the move and we don't have the right equipment here to track them down."
Dean nods. "Okay," he says. "Gather the other two and meet me outside."
A few minutes later, the rest of the gang comes out of the apartment. "I don't want to go back," Carter says. "I have friends that are going to miss me."
"Well," Derek says, putting his stuff into the trunk. "Welcome to the life of hunting, cupcake."
She sticks her tongue out at the boy. "Whatever."
"Any word from Emma?" Derek asks, climbing into the back seat.
"Her and Michael just made it to Washington State," Dean says, starting the impala. "Say they're going to do a quick and easy hunt there before making their way to South Dakota for another hunt."
"They're hunting?" Carter asked. "I thought Emma left because she didn't want to hunt anymore?"
Dean shakes his head. "I don't know what that girl wants anymore."
"That makes two of us," Derek says, staring out the window. No one says after that. The car ride to Bobby's is fairly quiet. They all take turns driving, only stopping for food and gas. The entire way, they all think of Emma and Michael and the kind of danger they are in.
"Please keep them safe," Dean prays one night. "Please. Just protect them. Especially her. Don't let anything happen to her." He looks up to the sky as if expecting an answer. Just as expected, there's no reply. He sighs and stands up from the grass and makes his way back into Bobby's, just wishing for not the last time, that Emma was there and safe with him.
