A few paces down the path, I found the Box. A path to the right led down to the river, and across from it was the entrance to a cave. I went in. It was a shop, belonging to a very old tortoise. He had a pointed beard, and one huge yellow eye seemed to be perpetually shut. He was dressed like an archeologist, with a magnifying glass and a tan jacket and pith helmet. "Woah, there!" he said. "I've got some neat junk for sale! What are you looking for?"
"Oh, uh... food?"
"These here are crab apples; aquatic fruits shaped like crabs. And this is sea tea, made from the glowing marshwater, which will increase your speed for a battle. Want anything?"
I bought a few crab apples and some sea tea. "Hey, uh, sir? You wouldn't happen to know what this is, would you?"
"Looks like dog residue to me."
"Do you want it?"
"I'm tryin' to get rid of my junk, not get more of it! Though, I've heard if you want to sell stuff, the Temmie Villaige is your best bet."
"Where's that?
"Where is it?"
"Yeah, the sign back there had question marks next to it."
He smiled and his eyes narrowed. "I don't remember."
That was helpful... "Who are you?"
"I'm Gerson. I've been around a long time. Maybe too long. Studying history sure is easy when you've lived through so much of it yourself! Wa ha ha!"
There wasn't much inside Gerson's cave but the items he was selling, and... that strange symbol etched into the wall. The three triangles, the middle one pointing down, with the winged circle over them. "What does that emblem mean? I've seen it everywhere."
"Eh? You don't know what that is? What are they teaching you in school nowadays...? Wa ha ha!" It was strange how none of the vendors seemed to recognize me as human, but everyone else did... "That's the Delta Rune, the emblem of our kingdom. The Kingdom... of Monsters. Wahaha! Great name, huh?"
"It's actually called the Kingdom of Monsters?"
"It's as I always say... Ol' King Fluffybuns can't name for beans."
Of course... wait, Fluffybuns? "What does the emblem mean?"
"That emblem actually predates written history. The original meaning has been lost to time... All we know is that the triangles symbolize us monsters below, and the winged circle above symbolizes... somethin' else. Most people say it's the 'angel', from the prophecy..."
An angel in a prophecy. Go figure. "What angel? What prophecy?"
"Oh yeah... the prophecy... Legend has it, an 'angel' who has seen the surface will decend from above and bring us freedom. Lately, the people have been taking a bleaker outlook... Callen that winged circle the 'Angel of Death'. A harbinger of destruction, waitin' to 'free' us from the mortal realm. In my opinion, when I see the little circle... I jus' think it looks neat! Wahaha!"
"So, what do you think about the king? I've been hearing... mixed perceptions of him."
"King Fluffybuns? He's a friendly, happy-go-lucky kind of guy..." Who kills kids? Did Toriel have a false perception of him? "If you keep walking around long enough, you'll probably meet him. He loves to walk around and talk to people."
"Why do you call him 'King Fluffybuns'?"
"Eh? Why do I call Dreemurr 'Fluffybuns'? Oh, that's a great story!"

FanfictionThis is a novel version of Undertale's Pacifist Run. I hope it reads like a novel, rather than simply a narration of the game. Almost all dialogue is taken directly from the game (except for the protagonist's, which is obviously improvised). In the...
