... { " Why would you just avoid
me like that? " }Of course, the first thing I see as I entered the school hallway was the dark glint of brown. His eyes found mine; we faced each other from opposite ends of the long stretch of floor. His pink lips tugged into a genuine smile, and I couldn't help but smile back at him.
"That boy is bad news, Ivory. I don't want you seeing or speaking to him again."
My mother's harsh voice echoed through my head and forced my eyes downwards. Dammit, I wish he didn't see me.
I quickly jerked my body around and began to run away. I pushed my tiny body through the large cluster of bigger bodies that rushed to class. I didn't dare turn back; afraid I would see the hurt in Wyatt's eyes as he would be swallowed by teenagers. Another heavy weight piled itself into my lungs, suffocating me as my whole body filled with regret, guilt, and anger. I slammed myself against the wall of a suddenly empty hallway, trying to control the panicked breaths.
"Ivory?" Wyatt's confused, silky voice made me jump. I didn't turn around, I couldn't. My body was frozen. "Ivory!" He yelled this time, and I could hear his footsteps fasten.
I couldn't run away again; my body wouldn't let me. I was trapped.
Finally, his tall presence descended over me and as much as I wanted to take him into my arms and never let go, my heavy breathing made my head spin. "I-I can.. explain-"
"Why would you just avoid me like that? After everything I just told you? Do you know how hard it was for me to spill all my secrets to you like that?" Everything was spinning, including Wyatt's saddened face. "Ivory? What's happening?" His voice was suddenly more worried than angry.
"I-I..." I couldn't get out another word. I felt the gravity around me push me to the ground, and I was now on the floor gasping for air. My head was heavy and ached from coming into contact with the hard floor.
"Not again..." Was all I heard come out of Wyatt's mouth, before darkness claimed my vision.
-
"I'm sorry ma'am, but you're wrong."
A familiar voice sparked a giant ball of light, blinding me as my eyes began to open. I squinted against the bright orange light that beamed from a lamp in my lounge room.
Wait, why are we in the lounge room?
I must've fainted, again.
"And how am I wrong?" My mothers voice then began. "Please, enlighten me." Her sarcasm could cut throats.
"Look, all I'm saying is, I'm not the kind of guy that would intentionally put your daughter in danger." Wyatt explained.
I continued to pretend to be asleep on the couch as I listened in on my mother and Wyatt's conversation.
"From what I've gathered, you've done nothing but put her in danger!"
"Ma'am, you're overreacting. Please, just give me a chance." Wyatt begged, which surprised me. Wyatt begging for a chance just doesn't fit his 'bad boy' demeanour. Suddenly, after a long silence, Wyatt sighed softly. "I need Ivory in my life, she means a lot to me. Nobody has ever made me feel this way."
I heard my mother gasp ever so slightly, and I had to open my eyes and 'wake up.'
"Ah, Ivory, you're finally awake!" My mother suddenly went from angry to cheerful. She shifted herself onto the couch beside me and her cool hand touched my forehead, soothing the aching headache I completely forgot I had. "Good, you're forehead isn't hot anymore."
I stared up at her in confusion and then turned to Wyatt, raising an eyebrow for an explanation. "You kinda hit your head pretty hard when you fainted." He blushed as he scratched the back of his head. "I couldn't quite catch you."
Wyatt just blushed. I really am dreaming, aren't I?
"It's not your fault, I'm sorry for fainting on you like that-" I sat up from the couch only to fall back down as my head began to pound.
"Ivory, sweetie, don't get up so suddenly." My mother said worriedly and laid a wet towel on my forehead once I settled back into my original position on the couch. "Wyatt, I would like to speak to my daughter alone, please." She said.
My wide eyes flickered to Wyatt. He nodded and gave me a quick smile before leaving the room.
Great, here comes the lecture.
"Ivory-"
"Look mum, b-before you say anything, I-I just want you to know that I'm really sorry, about everything." I quickly stuttered.
She stared at me for a short moment, then let out a giggle. "Oh sweetheart, it's fine."
"W-what?" I asked surprisingly.
She grabbed my hand and held it tight; her warm fingers were comforting. "Ivory, I should be the one who's sorry. I shouldn't have overreacted like that. I should've gotten to know Wyatt before judging him. He's a very sweet boy, taking care of you like that made me realise that you are safe in his hands."
"I know your father isn't around anymore, but Wyatt can be a great manly presence for you. You'll be safe with him, my dear."
I couldn't believe the kind words that came out of my mothers mouth. She has never said anything like that before, let alone even talk about my father.
As my eyes began to tear up, I sat up slowly and wrapped my arms around my mothers shoulders. "I love you, mum." I whispered.
I felt her arms hug my waist and tighten, before she replied, "I love you too."
