... { " I needed to get away. " }A heavy sigh escaped my lips as I stared up at the school building, deciding whether I should ditch and go to the park or face the crowded hallways. Mum doesn't care what I do, she's never around anyway, besides, nobody notices me at school. But for some reason, I couldn't bring myself to turn around and run to the fields of freedom.
Gulping down my fear, I scurried up the steps and went inside. The hallway wasn't as crowded, so I quietly and carefully made my way through the waves of students.
For some reason, I ended up being pushed into an empty hallway. Looking back at the student traffic behind me, I decided that I wouldn't go through that again. I may run into somebody I don't want to see.
Slumping my posture, I walked down the hall, wondering where I was. I have never been to this side of the school before, mostly because I take all the creative subjects and this is the more logical side. I was never a fan of science or maths.
A faint echo of deep voices interrupted my thoughts as I neared a corner. Slowing down, I tried to figure out who was talking. The voices were familiar, no doubt someone in my classes. I stopped and peered my head around the wall and my eyes came across two shadowy bodies.
"You said you would have it done by tonight," one voice spoke.
"I know, but it's not that easy. Something's... come up," the other replied.
"Well, it better get done or you won't live to see another day."
That voice was way too familiar.
That cold, harsh tone.
Wyatt.
I gulped and looked around, hoping to find an exit to escape the hallway without being seen. I spotted an empty classroom and rushed towards it, silently praying that I wasn't seen as I crawled underneath a desk. The room was dark and small streaks of white light leaked into the room as the only light source.
What could Wyatt and that other boy be talking about? What came up? It must have been important if Wyatt threatened the boy like that. As I thought, my bottom lip rolled into my mouth to be chewed on, when suddenly the door creaked open.
My heart stopped and I sucked in a sharp breath. I didn't dare move, afraid that whoever was now lurking inside the classroom would catch me.
Footsteps surrounded the table I was under and it wasn't long before a glaring face appeared in front of me. I gasped and shuffled away, startled. "Found you," Wyatt's smooth voice spoke as he sat on his knees and stared at me.
I brought my knees to my chest, trying to distance myself from him as much as I could. "Come on out, sweetheart. I don't bite." He said while smirking.
My heart raced at the nickname and I did as told and climbed out from under the desk. I kept my gaze to the floor, afraid that if I look into his eyes they will cut me in half.
"What did you hear?" He asked, his tone bitter, and I shook my head in confusion. "Don't play dumb, I know you were listening in." Realisation hit me and I shook my head again, earning a frustrated sigh from Wyatt. "This is gonna be harder than I thought..." he whispered softly. Confusion filled me again at the comment. I didn't understand how he was harsh one second, then soft the next.
Once he noticed I was staring at him with my head tilted, his lips twitched into a small, but heart-warming smile. I have never seen him smile before. As he did, though, I became scared.
My eyes traced the door in desperation to leave the room. I wanted so badly to disappear, to evaporate into thin air, to melt into the ground, to fly away. I felt extremely self-conscious under Wyatt's gaze. It was like he was trying to see right through me. I wanted to get away. I needed to get away.
And I did. I quickly stood up and bolted for the door, almost tripping as I did and ignoring Wyatt's calls. I ran faster than I had ever ran before until I reached my class.
