... { " I wish she didn't have to work so hard. " }
I felt something warm and fluffy tickle the end of my nose, causing it to cringe. My eyes fluttered open from my nap and fell upon a small, black animal. I sat up, goose bumps arising on my forearms in surprise before I realised what it was. "Nightmare, you scared me."
All I received was a sleepy, "meow," before the cat decided to jump on my stomach and curl into a ball.
"Oh no, you are not sleeping on me." I picked her up and placed her on the ground before I sat up in my bed and stretched my arms. A long yawn escaped me, my body still tired from the nap.
I checked the time on my phone and realised I had being sleeping for three hours. Just as I stood up Tommy, my little brother, entered the room. His eyes widened when he saw me and he jumped, his stuffed bunny Ralph flopping in his arms. "Sis, you're finally awake!"
I let out a laugh and picked him up, resting him on my hip. "Yep! Now what does Ralph want for dinner?"
He lifted his stuffed toy up to his ear and muttered something to it before looking back up at me. "Ralph wants pancakes!"
"You can't have pancakes for dinner, Tommy."
"But Ralph really wants pancakes!" he whined, his bottom lip pouting as he pulled one of his famous 'I'll -cry -if -you -don't -give -me -what -I -want' face.
I sighed in defeat and walked out of my room to the kitchen. "Alright, I'll make you and Ralph pancakes."
"Yay!" Tommy cheered, holding Ralph high up.
Once I set Tommy down, I began to make pancakes for dinner.

I watched Tommy with a small smile playing on my lips as he tried to feed Ralph some of his leftover pancakes. Tommy first got Ralph when he was only a baby and has been inseparable with the toy ever since. He feeds it, sleeps with it, heck, he even bathes with it.
Sometimes, I worry for my brother's sanity.
My attention was drawn from Tommy to the front door as it opened, revealing my mum. Exhaustion was etched on her face and small bags began to appear under her eyes. I was surprised that she actually came home early from work. Usually she would come home late and sometimes she would even stay there over night.
"I'm home!" she called out, her voice slightly hoarse. Tommy got off his chair and ran into mum, causing her to take a few steps back. "How's my handsome man?" she said as she hugged him back. "Something smells good."
"I made pancakes," I said, leaning against the wall.
"For dinner?"
"Don't look at me, it was his idea." I pointed over at Tommy, who gave our mum an innocent look.
She laughed. "Did he give you the face?" she asked with eyebrows raised. I sheepishly nodded and she shook her head. "Weak."
"Hey!" I said, offended.
Mum gave me an apologetic look before heading to her room. "I'm off to bed."
"What about dinner?"
She waved me away with her hands and disappeared into another room.
She works too hard, but she can't help it. Somebody's got to pay the bills and support the children. I do my part in taking care of Tommy while she works, but I feel like it's not enough. I wish she didn't have to work so hard.
