"Maggie?" I called in a whisper as I closed the door and searched in places she could hide but she wasn't in sight. I told her to stay put, why didn't she listen? Why didn't I stay? There were people trying to kill and I had no idea where she was.
I wanted to get out of here and call 911. Now, I had to find Maggie. I placed my gun away and went through my draws to find my fully charged emergency cell phone. I scrolled the first number on the contacts lists and I dialled it.
"Hello?" The voice on the other end said, I could tell the voice was confused because it would have come up as an unknown number.
"Dad," I said with relief. I began to calm down as I knew that I was talking to a trained cop who knew what to do in these situations. I mean, of course I knew what to do but I've never done this before. I've only trained for something like this.
"Alexis, your number came up as unknown." He said, the relief also in his voice.
I sighed and paced around the room. "I know, that's because I'm using my emergency phone."
I heard movement on the other end before he replied. "Why? What's going on?"
"There's a shooter or multiple shooters around the campus. I don't know much, all I know is that someone is dead with multiple gunshot wounds, the power is out and I can't find Maggie." I said in one breath.
I could hear more movement from the other end and I knew he was going to call 911. "Alexis, don't ever hang up, okay?" He asked as I could still hear movement in the background, I heard him call my mother's name to call 911 and when she asked why, I could hear her freak out. My dad tried to calm her down before he got back to me.
"Lex, are you still there?"
"Yes." I said, feeling my gun just to make sure it was secure.
"Okay, do you have your gun?"
I nodded, knowing he couldn't see me. "Yes."
"A flashlight?"
"Yes."
"Smart girl," he said, "now look out the window and tell me what you see." My dad finished while using his detective voice on me.
I walked over to the window and slowly moved the curtain enough so I could see the outside world. I saw nothing. Only the empty pavements and the buildings that surrounded the campus but I saw no movement. "I see nothing." I finally said, "nobody is around. It's like a ghost town around here."
Dad sighed and I could tell that he wanted to come and get me but he couldn't and I didn't want him to. My main priority was to find Maggie and possibly the others. "Okay, the cops have been called. You need to stay where you are."
"No!" I said, looking away from the window. "It's not safe to stay in one place, I have to find Maggie." My dad knew as well as I did that it wasn't safe to stay put but as a cop, that was what he was supposed to say to people like me but I was not like most people.
I could defend myself.
"Lexie, I know you want to find her but staying put and waiting for the police is your best bet." He said, I shook my head and ran my free hand through my hair.
"Dad," I breathed, "the cops could take a while and you have taught me everything there is to know about being a cop. I can fire a gun, I can fight. Maggie doesn't have a father like I do; she'll die trying to get away."
I remembered how Maggie looked terrified when she heard the shots and when I left her. I shouldn't have left her alone in here, I saw a dead body which meant that the people who killed her were probably still in this building.
