They were stupid kids, trying to fit in with one another. I was, unfortunately, just like them.

The sign before us terrified me and I could see the unease in most of their eyes.

The restricted area stretched out across a large part of land including the field, a large forest, and a mountain.

I couldn't believe I allowed myself to be dragged here. I couldn't believe I wasn't strong enough to say no just because I didn't want to be alone anymore.

I hugged myself while the other teens whispered amongst themselves.

There was about seven of us standing by the fence. I was the odd one out, clearly, as I had no one to whisper to.

Jake, with his cocky grin, was the one that rounded all of us up and brought us here.

He's an idiot, but I'd never say that out loud.

"You know, they say this place is haunted by all the souls from the bodies that were forgotten here" Jake spoke out as he made it past the fence, brave (or dumb) teens followed closely behind, a few of us lagging.

"The bodies just disappear too. Apparently the government comes in and removes the contaminated bodies before they mutate into some sort of undead monster."

I rolled my eyes at his stupid rumors. I mean, come on, undead monsters? Is that the best he could think of?

Already the two other girls that came along were clinging to his arms, afraid of what was in the empty field.

Had it been lighter out I would have been fine but even I found myself inching towards some of the stronger looking teens out here, cursing myself for being so weak.

"Like zombies?" A blonde headed bimbo asked, even in the dark I could easily tell her face was caked in makeup.

She was the closest to Jake, squeezing his arms and feeling his muscles.

I scowled. I did not want to put up with stupid comments from girls that couldn't get anything higher than a 56% on their math test.

"Yeah, but don't worry babe, you'll be fine." I chuckled at hearing Jake's words. Yeah, she'll be fine. What zombie wants someone with more layers of makeup than layers on the world's largest onion. Either way, they'll both put tears in your eye.

But Jake's comment was no more reassuring than a pilot telling his passengers he has no clue how to fly while flying over the Pacific ocean.

I held myself closer, trying to ignore the way my hair stood on end each time the wind changed.

It was getting cold and it was hard to see very far ahead of us. Our flashlights were turned off, courtesy of our fearless leader; Jake. He thought it would be a bad idea to bring lights that would attract the authorities.

He was right to a degree. I wouldn't want to get caught out here in the middle of the night.

By now we were far away from the fence and our vehicles and still nothing had jumped out at us.

I was cold and tired of this. I just wanted to go home.

I grimaced at what I was about to say.

"Okay Jake, nothing has happened and this is getting boring. Are we done here?" I hated how that sounded because I knew to them it sounded like I was afraid, and they would not live that down.

"Awe, is little Tristan scared of the dark? Gonna run home to your mommy and cry yourself to sleep again? What a wuss." Jake sneered while his companions snickered.

"Yeah, why did we even bother to bring you along, we should have known you would be such a buzzkill." A black haired boy pitched in but I could still hear the quiver in his voice.

My scowl deepened at their taunting and I knew I had made a mistake as I saw Blondie's grin stretch across her face.
"What? Do you think something is gonna jump out at us? Trust me sweetheart, that face of yours would scare off anything within a ten foot radius." She snickered, her lips twisting in a horrid way.

Just then a twig snapped and all our heads spun towards the sound, the sneer wiping off of Blondie's face.

Even the almighty Jake looked scared.

"What was that?" One of the football players accompanying us whispered, his voice shaking slightly.

"I don't know, man." Jake answered in a similar tone.

Blondie and her friend grasped the arm closest to them out of fright.

I shook but I'd be damned if I stooped so low as to clutch someone close to me out of fear.

Especially not anyone from this group.

Besides, it was probably just an animal, right?

We all stood still, waiting for a while before we all turned towards each other again.

"Hey man, I think we should head back." Another boy from the group suggested.

Jake's face hardened.

"No, we are going to make it to the other end of the fence. Or are you too much of a girl to handle it?" He taunted and his friend scowled.

"No, let's go." And we headed off once again, albeit a lot more high strung than before.

Another twig snapped and this time I jumped closer to the person near me which, coincidentally, happened to be Jake himself. Though I take pride in the fact that I didn't hold onto him for dear life like some people.

"Jake..." One of the boys started.

"Yeah?" He responded under his breath, not even caring that it was me he was standing next to as he brought himself closer to my side.

"I think we should go..."

A pair of arms reached out and latched onto the black haired boy, pulling him back.

His screams mixed with our own as he struggled to get away from the mangled arms holding him in place.

The boy was released with a hiss from his attacker and Jake pushed his friend to his feet. The flashlight in his hand indicated he had hit the thing in the bush.

My blood ran cold. What the hell was going on?

"Go! Dammit, run!" Jake shouted, pushing us all forwards towards the treeline up ahead.

I had never been so scared in my life as the seven of us ran from the unknown danger in the shadows.

The black haired boy lagged as he was battered and bruised, a large gash ran down his left arm but Jake pushed him forward.

A few tears ran down my cheek.

God how I wished I hadn't been so desperate to not be lonely anymore.

What had we gotten into?
