Chapter Twenty-Two
"Dionysus?" Persephone gapes. "What are you doing here?"
"To see your beautiful face, why else?" Spencer grins, striding forward and wrapping his arms around her in a tight hug. Evie's expression drops, and she abruptly turns on her heel and stalks away. I purse my lips, folding my arms as I watch her go.
Smooth work Spencer. Real smooth.
"How did you find me?" Persephone asks, her forehead furrowing in confusion. "I was so careful."
"We were all very determined." Spencer chuckles, glancing over at me. Persephone follows his gaze, and it's like she only just really clicks that I'm standing there. Her big green eyes widen a fraction.
"You had another person in your group." She frowns. "Where is she?"
Spencer's gaze flickers around, and he looks at me with an unspoken question in his eyes. I nod stiffly, and he lets out a long breath, scratching the back of his head. "Yeah, she's not exactly your biggest fan Seph."
"Why?" She asks, her voice soft and melodic. I watch her silently, taking in her dainty, doll-like ethereal beauty. I decide in that moment that I don't like her. She's too celestial, too angelic, too perfect that it's actually frustrating. She's the first person I've met this entire quest that I've straight away known is otherworldly.
And for some strange reason, that annoys the hell out of me.
"I'm sure you know exactly why Persephone." Spencer replies awkwardly, and she raises a finely tuned eyebrow in reply. "Let's just say Evie had to clean up the biggest mess you've ever left behind."
Persephone's eyes widen. "He found another queen?" She gasps incredulously. "Is she okay?"
"Of course she's okay, you great idiot." Spencer scoffs. "Why else would she be plotting up fifteen ways to decapitate you right now?"
Persephone smiles minutely. "They're perfectly suited for each other then."
"Seph, don't be like that." Spencer grouses. "She's my best friend."
"She's your-" Her jaw drops. "How much did I miss out on Dionysus? Since when did you befriend humans?"
"The name's Spencer now." Spencer winks. "So, a lot."
Persephone laughs.. "I have missed you Dio-Spencer."
"You too Seph." Spencer smiles at her. I clear my throat loudly, giving him a pointed look when he turns to me. "What?"
"We're kind of here for a reason Spencer?"
"Oh, right." His expression grows serious. "We need a favour."
"Of course. Anything for you." She nods, tilting her head to the side a little in bewilderment. "What is it?"
"Someone stole my thrysus." He tells her, and she inhales sharply. "And we were told that you had information on how to get it back."
"Spencer, I had nothing to do with it being-" She starts, and Spencer interjects.
"No, I know that Seph. I know you're not that kind of person, it's always annoyed me how righteous you are." He smirks, and she narrows her startling violet eyes at him. "But you might know something about what happened, who stole it, where they might hide it. And I know you love me - I mean, who couldn't, I'm a wonderful ball of charm bestowed upon a ruggedly handsome body-" It's at this point that I elbow him hard, and he dials it down hastily. "So I know you'll want to help in any way you can."
