-Calum Hood-
Grade 8
Walking down the pavement in the pouring rain is a habit I do quite often.
Saying I hate summer is an understatement. Sweater weather is the one thing I always look forward to.
Humming to the song thats been stuck in my head, I suddenly heard a loud scream.
I ran in the direction of the scream that I just heard and saw a girl around my age and an old man trying to take her bag.
"Hey! What the heck are you doing?!" I screamed.
"Mind your own fucking business kid" he spat.
I ran to the old man and punched him in the face.
"Get the fuck away from her!" I screamed.
"What the fuck kid?!" He screamed.
He stood up and tried to take a swing on me but I kicked him where I know it'll hurt. He screamed in agony and I grabbed the girl's hand and started to run as far as we could.
"Are you okay?" I asked, taking a few deep breaths.
She nodded and said, "Thank you. I'm Olivia by the way." She stood straight and extended her hand.
"I'm Calum." I smiled and shook her hand.
"What are you doing outside at 3 am in a pouring rain?" I asked looking at my watch.
"What? Am I not allowed to have a midnight stroll? I could say the same thing to you." She said in an annoyed expression.
"I was just asking." I chuckled.
"So, what are you doing outside?" She said.
"I was just having a walk." I replied, avoiding her eyes.
"In the pouring rain?" She said.
"Hey! Don't judge! You're the one who almost lost their bag to a thief." I said with a smirked.
"Shut up." She chuckled.
I suddenly realized that I was soaking wet. I looked around and caught sight of a cafe close by, which was surprisingly still open.
"Do you wanna head there? I asked pointing at the nearby cafe.
She looked at the café, and then at me, contemplating on whether she should trust me or not.
"I don't bite." I chuckled.
"That's what most thieves say." She smirked.
"Wait. How many thieves have you encounter?" I asked.
"Eh, not much." She chuckled.
We entered the cafe to find it brightly lit. The place's atmosphere is very welcoming which is really delightful.
"This place is really cool." She said as she observes her surroundings.
I nodded in agreement and sat at a nearby chair. She sat across from me and stared at me, observing every feature of my face.
"What?" I chuckled.
"Nothing." She said trying to avoid my gaze.
"Good.... Morning lovebirds! How may I help you this early in the morning?" asked a waitress, who walked over and smiled.
"Oh we're no-"
"Two cups of coffee would do." I smiled at the woman.
"Alright! It'll be ready in 5 minutes." she assured as she walked away.
