12-The Wait

Morgan and Landon were just gettimg home and out of the car. It had just started raining so they were trying to get out quick.
"I need one of you to stay in the car. Don't get out I'll be right back but one of you is driving or I'm driving. We are leaving I can explain in the car," Shelbi said then turned around to go back in the house. She ran through the mud and slipped but she didn't care that she fell in her favorite shirt, the one Ryan let her keep. She grabbed her wallet with her driving permit and her phone then ran back outside. Morgan was already in the drivers seat so she ran around the car and hopped in the passenger seat.
"What happened? Where are we going? Why do you look horrified?" Morgan bombarded her with questions as they drove out of the neighborhood.
"Ryan was in an accident."
"What? How?" Morgan immediately sped up by about 20 mph on the highway.
"Jackie just texted me and said he's at Saint Francis. We have to get there. Quick. I have to apologize."
"What. Happened? Why won't you tell me? Just focus!" Everyone, especially Morgan, loves Ryan.
"Okay so Ryan faught with Jack and Dai and came over about an hour ago. Then he got mad here at the house because of me and Jo. He left after us fighting and said he was going to the cabin. I told him to go and chill out and I'd see if he was calm later. He stormed off and so did I. He must have been on his way up there and got in a wreck. I feel horrid!" She had started crying more as she was telling Morgan what she knew.
"It's not your fault at all! Don't blame yourself we still don't know what happened we'll be there in 6 minutes and we will get to him."
"We are 15 minutes away!"
"Not anymore," Morgan went as fast as possible in the rain and they got there in four minutes.
When they got to the nurses station they found out that he'd been rushed into surgery and they'd have to wait to see him.
"What does he need surgery for? How could I have let him leave? I'm so fucking stupid! I know how he drives when he's mad and I let him leave!" As Shelbi was cursing herself under her breath she was pacing the waiting room.
"Stop. Shelbi! Stop pacing! It'll be fine its not your fault. You didn't know this would happen. You didn't cause this. Just sit down and wait for mom to come," Morgan said grabbing her by the shoulders and forcing her to sit. Next to Morgan was Jackie and on the row in front of them was landon, all the kids, Michael, Damien, and Ryan's parents.

"Mom! I'm so glad you're here!" Shelbi said grabbing the coffee her mom got her and giving her a hug.
"Sorry it took so long I had to get through construction and lots of traffic with the storms and all. How long has he been in surgery? Has anyone come out to talk to yall?" She hugged everyone else and sat next to Shelbi.
"No we haven't talked to anyone and he's been in surgery for 2 and a half hours," Jackie ' voice was shaky but she was the most coherently speaking person at the moment.
"Okay. That's fine that means they are working hard on him. Maybe this is our doctor right now."
"It's not. He's come out three times to talk to those people," Morgan pointed across the room as a big group of people with bandages and fancy blood covered clothes stood up. "I went to the bathroom and heard them talking. They were on their way home from an all day prom thing and got hit by a semi truck. Two people in critical condition in surgery right now."
"Wow okay well they will come talk to us. Don't worry." Leah didn't know how to respond to any of that so she quickly moved on.

"Crutchfield family?" A man in bright green scrubs came from the back behind the nurses station.
"Yes that's us!" Damien stood and ran his hand through his hair quickly.
"I'm Dr. Avary. I was lead surgeon for Ryan. I just wanted to say I'm so sorry that we couldn't get out here to talk to you guys sooner. Ryan is out of surgery. His surgery went very well. It was actually very quick for the scale of what was needed. It was only 4 hours and 25 minutes. That's very good. We had to remove shrapnel from his abdomen and upper thighs. He also was in need of an appendectomy. He would have started feeling that soon if he hadn't felt it already. While we were in there we did that as well. He is in recovery right now and I see there are many people here for him. That is great except family only is allowed in his room at this time. Ge hasnt woken up yet but should wake within the next couple hours if not sooner. He should make a full recovery and be as healthy as ever. Where are his parents?"
"Right here and I'm his sister and that's his brother," Jackie pointed at who was who and the doctor led them back to his room.

"Hey, Shelbi, we should go home. C'mon." Morgan whispered as she woke up her little sister.
"No I can't leave. Not until I apologize for the stuff i said and way I acted." She replied after she bolted up and sat tall.
"Shelbi it's been three hours since his surgery ended. He's not waking up any time soon."
"I don't care!" With all the stress she just blew up on her sister. "I'm not going anywhere until he's up!"
"Okay. I'm going home. I'll bring you stuff so you can change when i get up for work. It's like midnight and I'm tired. I'll see you later." Morgan got mad but was still understanding.
"Okay bye love you," She whispered as they hugged.
"It'll be okay. I promise," Morgan whispered back as they finished the hug and she went home.

About half an hour later Damien came out and took Shelbi back to Ryan's room. "He still hasn't woken up. Morgan texted and said you were out here alone and they said it's okay for more than just immediate family now. They don't know what happened so they are running tests. They say he's fine the anesthesia just weighs heavily on him because he's young and skinnier than average teens."
"Okay. Are you sure he will be okay?" Shelbi and Damien were standing outside the door to Ryan's room and whispering.
"He has to be okay. He wouldn't leave you right now."
"I love yall. I don't know how I actually lived without you guys." Shelbi said as she hugged Damien and went inside.
