The Final Hope

Chapter 8

The next day Tony picked me up from school.

"You and Steve are acting like a divorced couple fighting over the custody of their child. I mean you technically just kidnapped me" I said.

"No we're not. I just need to show you something" we drove to a helicopter pad.

"Tony where are we going" I asked. We flew to the middle of the ocean where a structure rose out of the deep.

"What is this Tony" I asked when we got out of the chopper.

"This is a prison" he answered as we headed inside.

"Why do you need a prison".

"To hold the heroes that oppose the Superhuman Registration Act".

"You mean like Clint and Steve".

"No, I mean like to ones who riot".

"Like Steve" I said again "Tony you're starting a war and now you've gone too far". 

"I'm taking precautions".

"This is not a precaution, this will start an all out war" I said.

"I don't plan on locking you in here".

"Really, and what if I choose Cap's side" I asked.

"You won't because my side is better, and you'd be a criminal if you went against a government act".

"I'm staying out of this. Take me home" Tony did exactly that.

The next day I went looking for the Winter Soldier. I wanted answers and I knew how to get them. I went for a jog in Central Park. Not long after I started running I passed a blonde woman.

"On your left" I said as a force of habit.

I used my powers to confirm that this woman was Stephanie Malick. I passed her a few more times and then I sat down on a bench next to her.

"I'm Stephanie" she extended her hand.

"Will" I shook her hand.

"Man you can run" she said "and with your leg in a brace too".

"That was a just a jog" I kept the act up.

"That was not. You were full out sprinting" she was being very convincing.

"Look I only ran twenty miles. For me that's a jog".

"How old are you".

"I'm seventy-two" I stated.

"You're kidding".

"Yeah, I'm thirteen" I said "say Stephanie, you look really familiar; have I seen you or one of your family members anywhere".

She got pale. I had probably just ruined things.

"You probably haven't seen me anywhere".

"Why do you want to take me back to Hydra" I asked. I just ruined things.

"What".

"I know exactly who you are and why you're here so don't play dumb with me".

"Okay fine" she said dropping her act "the creature wants you".

"He'll have to come get me himself" I said walking away. I knew that if she came after me then I could outrun her.

Someone started walking beside me.

"What you did back there was really stupid" the Winter Soldier said.

"It was the only way to find you".

"Why'd you want to find me".

"I need answers" I stated "when you and I spoke a few months ago you said that you knew me when I was a kid. What did you mean by that".

"Hydra captured me right around the time you were born so I've known about you for seventy-two years. I was there when they unfroze you and your brother. They wanted someone that could hold you down in case your powers flared up. I kept your beatings to a minimum and got them to not beat their brother; I see how that may have backfired. I watched you and your brother grow up. I feel like I owe it to your dad to keep watching you guys" he said.

"Well my dad is looking for you so would you just come out of hiding already. I've been lying to him constantly about our meetings and he's stopped buying them" I said.

"Not yet".

"Well I could use your help in the oncoming war so you better let him find you soon".

"I can't promise anything" he turned and left; I didn't dare follow.
