Having spent so many nights with Griffin and Lucian, it didn’t seem at all weird to wake up in their house. While the twins still slumbered, Fallon crawled out of bed and pulled on her standard jogging ensemble of shorts and a T-shirt and tennis shoes. The only thing she didn’t have for her run was her own iPod so she settled for using Lucian’s. Taking care to be quiet so she didn’t wake them, she slipped out the door and padded down the stairs. Fallon waited until she was outside before she sunk the ear buds into her ear and switched on the iPod. With so many acres at her disposal, she didn’t need to worry about leaving the grounds. Instead, she trotted toward the back yard.
As her feet beat an easy rhythm against the cushiony grass, beads of dew splashed against her ankles and calves. The cool morning air felt good against her skin and helped to clear her mind. Yesterday seemed like a bad dream. She still couldn’t believe her mom was dating Christian’s uncle. If ever there was proof God hated her that had to be it. First he’d taken her father and now he wanted her mother too. Fallon wasn’t stupid. She knew what God was doing. He was manipulating Elliot Church into using her mom so they could retrieve her soul from the twins. She just didn’t understand why. Millions of people around the world worshipped and believed. What was so special about her that God couldn’t just leave her alone and let her live in peace with the twins?
Fallon frowned to see Simeon jogging a few steps ahead of her. In the all the time she’d known him, she couldn’t recall ever seeing him jog. Though he once professed to love sports, especially the most extreme, she’d never seen him doing any of them. She turned off the music and hurried to catch up to him.
“Morning, Fallon.”
“Hey, Sim.”
“God doesn’t like to lose.”
“What?”
“God doesn’t like to lose, least of all to his most loathed enemy Satan. That’s why he’s so keen on saving your soul.”
“You mean I’m nobody special.”
“On the contrary. You are one of his most special and dangerous creations.”
“Dangerous?”
“You and you alone have the power to continue our bloodline, a prospect most dangerous to God.”
“Then why’d he create me?”
“For the same reason God does most everything he does; because he wanted to.”
“That figures.”
Simeon slid a smile in her direction. “So, you up for a challenge?”
“Yeah, I think I can handle Christian’s uncle,” she answered, and Simeon laughed.
“I was talking about a different kind of challenge.”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean a race.”
“You want to race me?”
“I’ll even give you a head start.”
“I don’t need a head start.”
While Simeon laughed again, Fallon shot toward the house. The sound of his laughter behind her grew even louder. It took only seconds for him to fly past her. Even though she knew she was going to lose, she didn’t care. She didn’t care about anything, and it felt great.
