Instead of paying attention to Mr. Jeffries’ pointless lecture on Monday morning, Fallon and Seth carried on a telepathic conversation about how they spent their weekends. If it wasn’t for Christian’s presence in the class, she would’ve indulged in a little intimidation of Tarilyn who refused to even glance her way. Considering the girl was brave enough to tell Christian she wanted to help bring them down, Fallon would’ve thought she’d welcome the chance to show off her skills. No such luck. Ever since her public break up with Griffin, she’d gone out of her way to avoid them.

When the classroom door opened, everyone looked up. A guy walked in and handed his schedule card to Mr. Jeffries. While the teacher looked over his card and then made a note in his roll book, almost every girl in the class looked the new guy up and down. From the way they were smiling, it was as if they’d never seen a guy before. Fallon studied him with a critical eye. He wasn’t the worst looking guy she’d ever seen, but there wasn’t anything special about his dime a dozen blue eyes and side swept brown hair.

“Now then,” Mr. Jeffries said as he pulled his face from the roll book, “I’d like to introduce everyone to our new student, Minos Savakis.”

“My nose?” Seth sneered, and laughter rippled through the room.

“That’s Minos, Mr. Avery, and thank you.”

            “For what?”

“For agreeing to let our new student have your seat while you move up front.”

            “What?” Fallon and Seth shrilled.

“I can sit up front,” Minos offered.

Fallon knitted her eyebrows together. With a name like Minos Savakis she figured he’d have a thick accent to go along with it. He didn’t sound any different than them.

Mr. Jeffries smiled at them. “Seth doesn’t mind giving up his spot. Do you, Seth?”

Seth muttered a couple of expletives as he grabbed his backpack and shuffled to the front of the room. A few girls shot envious looks at Fallon as Minos came down the aisle to take the seat in front of her. When he offered her a smile, she rolled her eyes. Though she didn’t know anything more than his name, something told her he was going to be trouble.

“Hey, girl,” Ava called when Fallon entered fourth period.

            “Hey,” Fallon echoed.

As she dropped into her seat, she glanced across the room. Still no sign of Tarilyn. No doubt, in keeping with her newly established routine, she’d wait until the last possible minute to show up. Then she’d slink into her chair without looking their way, probably hoping they wouldn’t notice her.

“Did you get your report done?” Ava asked, and Fallon shrugged.

In the most technical sense of the word, the report was finished. Of course, she hadn’t written it, but Miss Holt would never know that. Just as she’d been doing since sophomore year, she’d taken advantage of black magic to create what the teacher was sure to think was a stellar report.

“I stayed up all night finishing mine,” Ava said. “I’ll be totally pissed if…”

            “If what?”
