“Wait until you see my date for the Halloween party,” Daphne said. “He’s as hot as the costume I’m going to find.”
Fallon couldn’t believe it was already October and Halloween was next weekend. It seemed like they’d just gone back to school yesterday. Now it was almost November. They were inching closer to the reality of the end of school, a reality that still seemed too far to contemplate. For now, the girls concentrated on finding the perfect Halloween costumes.
“Who is this mystery man?” Ava asked.
Daphne gave them a sly smile. “It’s a surprise.”
“I’ll bet it’s Seth,” Ava guessed.
Even without the disdainful look that flickered across Daphne’s face, Fallon knew it wasn’t Seth. That was one mistake neither of them was making again, especially not Seth.
“Is it the guy you’ve been ditching us to have lunch with for the last couple of weeks?” Fallon asked.
“It might be,” Daphne told them.
“If it’s not him then I’m out of ideas,” Ava said.
“And this place is out of good costumes,” Daphne declared. “Let’s go to Jackie’s.”
Jackie’s was the biggest Halloween store in town. Even though it was open year round, this was the only time of year Fallon ever went there. It would probably have what they needed, but she wasn’t crazy about facing the crowds sure to be congregated there. Of course, if they were going to find good costumes they didn’t have much choice.
Fallon almost changed her mind when Daphne pulled her VW bug into the packed parking lot of Jackie’s. When they had to settle for a spot at the end of the lot, she knew they’d be there a while. Even if they got lucky enough to find the perfect costumes on the first try, they’d still have to deal with long lines at the fitting rooms and longer lines at the cash registers.
Fallon heaved a sigh when they pushed open the glass doors and her suspicions were confirmed.
Though they started out shopping together, it wasn’t long before they ended up getting separated. Fallon wasn’t too worried. Sooner or later they’d find each other. In the meantime, she wanted to find a costume and get the heck out of there. Fallon smiled as she reached for the cheerleader costume. When she was younger, she always wanted to be a cheerleader. Now, she thought they were kind of silly, but that didn’t mean she couldn’t have her wish for one night.
“I didn’t figure you for the cheerleader type.”
Fallon stiffened at the sound of Angelica’s voice beside her. “I didn’t figure you for the Halloween type.”
Angelica shrugged. “It’s not like I’m a nun.”
Fallon giggled. Last year, she and Lucian made quite a splash when they’d shown up dressed as a nun and a priest. Those costumes would be hard to top.
“I’m not here for me anyway,” Angelica continued. “I’m here for Wyatt. He’s totally excited about going trick or treating.”
As if on cue, Wyatt came running down the aisle. “Hey, Angel, I wanna be this for Halloween,” he said and shoved the bagged costume at Angelica. “Hey, Fallon. Are Lucian and Griffin here?”
