Elena entered the great hall, wrapped in her bed robes. She stood beside Ser Jared Crakehall, who was shaking slightly. Elena's father, Lord Bryce of house Caron stood by the long table, looking grave. Elena's older brother Wren was stood beside him, but Petyr and her mother were nowhere to be seen.
"Father? What's the matter?"
Her father didn't meet her eyes.
"It's your mother... She's not doing very well... she took ill during the night."
Elena felt her heart drop to her stomach, "what do you mean, 'not well'?"
There was a long silence.
"Will she be okay?" her voice quivered.
Another quiet pause.
"Maester Yandel has given her milk of the Poppy..."
Elena couldn't take it anymore. She sped along the length of the great hall, burst open the doors to the main spiral staircase, and sprinted up the stairs.
When Elena reached the top of the tower, she pushed open the doors to her parents chambers.
"Mother!" she wailed. Petyr was curled up by his mother's side, and Myra Caron was lying in her bed, unconscious.
"She's sleeping."
She turned to find Maester Yandel, a frail, grey haired old man, with a permanent thoughtful frown glued to his face along with a look of sheer depression, seated to her mothers left side, looking toward Lady Elena. Her six year old brother sniffled and sobbed. His freckly face was buried into his mothers neck, his head a big mess of brown, tangled and curly hair.
"This can't be happening..." Elena muttered, "how Maester? How is this happening?" She was fine yesterday!" Elena wept.
Maester Yandel narrowed his wet eyes and grimaced, "it's called the Great Spring Sickness... deadly and swift. I've not heard of anybody catching it for years... unfortunately a cure is unheard of... I'm so sorry my dear. This is ever so awful, she was like a daughter to me..." the Maester closed his eyes in complete and utter disbelief.
Elena let a stream of tears run down her face.
"All we can do now is pray to the Stranger for mercy."
