The man knocked Beck to the ground after multiple blows with his blunt iron sword to Beck's left shoulder, which was protected with rusty chain mail and metal plates.
Beck fell to his knees with a resounding thump.
"Yeah that's right, on your hands and knees like the animal you are."
Beck raised his gaze, and glared up at the elder, grey haired man. He had vivid green eyes and a yellow toothed smile.
"Incestuous cunts, the lot'a ya."
The scolding man spat down at Beck, who pushed himself up to kneel. He grabbed his iron sword, and stood back up.
"Want more ya ginger bastard?"
Beck's insides squirmed with hatred and his blood boiled. He felt a hand on his shoulder.
"C'mon Beck, we're stewards, not rangers." Ferret gripped Beck tightly on the shoulder, "he'll get what's coming to 'im. Believe you me, they all do."
------------------------------------------------
Once Beck and Ferret had gotten through the entire of the eleven piles of books that Maester Aemon had instructed them to stack in alphabetical order on one of the many bookshelves in the library, they went to find the brothers.
Rudd and Kean were bored out of their minds, with not very much to do other than sit and wait for news from the party who ventured north to search for the missing rangers. Ironically, those men themselves had now officially become missing rangers, as well.
The brothers were delighted when their two friends showed up.
"Beck, Ferret," Rudd grinned.
"Glad to see you two," Kean nodded."I wanna talk, all together," Ferret blurted out.
"What's up?"
Ferret checked to see if they were alone. They were in Rudd and Kean's chamber, the lighting was dim, each of the men cast a shadow across the wall.
"I've had an idea... about escaping," he whispered, "and I think it needs to be tonight."Beck widened his eyes.
"Tonight?!" he exclaimed.
"Yes, tonight," Ferret replied, "are you having doubts, Beck?"
"No I just... it just feels sudden. Why don't we just wait for a bit, until the other rangers get back. We can sneak off the next time they open the gates. It would be difficult for us to open the gates on our own, what with all the men on guard duty.""No," Ferret said without hesitation, "no. We leave tonight. There is no other way Beck, you must trust me."
Trust, he thought, how can I trust anybody? But instead he sighed heavily.
"Sure, we leave tonight."
------------------------------------------------
Beck went to his bed reluctantly that night. Ferret had informed them all to wait in their chambers and he would come find them, but he hadn't told them how he was planning on going about the escape.
Beck waited for several hours, and yet there was no sign of Ferret.
What is he doing?
Suddenly, the door to his chamber crept open.
"Beck," Ferret hissed in a harsh whisper, "it's time."
Beck jolted upright and jumped onto his feet. He then, marched straight towards the door and flung it open.
"Shh! For fucksake! We gotta be silent," Ferret held up his hands and sighed, "let's go."
Beck and Ferret snuck down the corridors and exited the hall leading to the many chambers. Rudd and Kean were standing outside in the snow. The four men congregated in the fighting quarters.
"This is terrifying!" Kean whispered, "but so exciting!"
"Nobody make a sound ok?" Ferret hissed once more, and held a finger to his lips. The men didn't come across any brothers on the night shift. Beck found this incredibly strange. He rounded on Ferret.
"What the fuck were you doing? What took you so long? Where are the guards?" he spat.
Ferret appeared shocked at first but eventually his face turned gradually more serious, and dark.He turned to the others, "I killed them. All of them."
The silence of the cold night ate at Beck's mind, sending a shiver down his spine.
Ferret nodded his head towards the fighting quarters, and as Beck followed his gaze, he noticed something he didn't quite notice first time round.
There were bodies littering the edge of the courts. Beck started towards it.
"Beck!" Ferret growled.
But Beck continued towards the bodies. He looked at every one of them disgustedly. It was a gruesome sight. Shock tightly coiled around his throat, making it impossible to utter a word. Before he turned back to his live brothers, one particular dead man caught his eye.
An old, greying man, with vivid green eyes and a gaping mouth. It was the same man that had called him a cunt. The same man that had knocked him to the ground, spat on him and laughed at his family name. His skin was a plain canvas, the painted wounds and holes that had been carved into the man stained the canvas and poisoned it with a foul red ink. His eyes stared into the distance, out of focus. Beck's blood pumped furiously in his veins.
Ferret placed a hand on Beck's shoulder.
"Come on, we've opened the gate, we gotta go."Ferret and Beck turned, and jogged toward the enormous gates.
The four men slowly trudged through the snow and into the tunnel. They said goodbye to the nightswatch and goodbye to their honour as they broke their vows in a single second.
