*Present day*

Beck heaved a load of books into Maester Aemon's library.

"Leave them there," the Maester said to him. Beck plonked them down on the table in the centre of the room, "thank you Beck."
Beck smiled, only just remembering that Maester Aemon couldn't see him.
"No problem," he said hurriedly, before striding out of the room.

It was getting dark outside. The sky was a fine shade of lilac.

"Pst."

Beck stopped dead in his tracks.

"Oi, it's Beck, right?"

Hiding behind the stables was a scrawny boy with a familiar face.

"You again," Beck started, "whaddya want?"

The scrawny boy pulled out a bottle of ale from behind his back, "fancy having a drink?"

Beck dithered for a moment, and reluctantly nodded his head. He needed to stop thinking...

"My name's Ferret by the way."

Ferret threw the empty bottle of ale over his head, the two men laughed.
"Hey, if this is what being a steward is like everyday then fuck being a ranger!" Beck exclaimed, chuckling like a fool.
Ferret laughed with him, and let out a deep, long sigh.

"You know this isn't so bad," he started, "being here... it could be worse, couldn't it?"
Beck rubbed his eyes to keep them open, "not for me, I had a great life before this."
Ferret grimaced, "lucky you."

Beck suddenly felt sad, "what did you do to get yourself stuck here then?"

Ferret didn't reply immediately. Beck was starting to feel more awake now, less intoxicated and more focused. He was intrigued, and felt less dismissive of the scrawny, skinny, stick of a boy.

"I... killed a man." he whispered.
"Oh," Beck spoke softly, "you're definitely not alone with that."
"And his wife." Ferret continued.

The night sky seemed to darken. There was not a single sound except for the faint snoring coming from the chambers behind them.

Beck was unsure on how to reply. He was definitely awake now.

"And their son."
This silence lasted for almost a full minute.

"How did you even manage to..." was all Beck could think of saying.

"They just... um... didn't expect it..."

The harsh wind that blew in shook castle black eerily. Beck shivered, he was freezing. The great ice wall glistened in the moonlight.

"Well... what did you do?" Ferret changed the subject, and gazed at Beck.

Beck looked Ferret in the eyes.
"I fell in love."
