"Oi!"
Kean fell to the ground. Beck had unarmed him during a practice sword fight and shoved him playfully into the dirt.
Rudd burst into a fit of laughter by the side of the fighting area. He stood tall beside Ferret, who was only about half his size.

Rudd and Kean were twin brothers. They were both long and lanky, Kean being ever so slightly taller than Rudd, and were both covered in freckles. Their thick and bushy hair was a dark, dirty blond colour, and their eyes a muddy brown. They had low voices and spoke with northern accents.
The two brothers had been at the wall for only two months, and had already told Beck and Ferret how much they wanted to leave.

Once they had finished fighting, Beck stood at the entrance to the tunnel that lead through the gigantic ice wall, beside Ferret and two of the other new recruits.
"So it's time," Ferret breathed, "you ready?"
Beck huffed, "I don't want to be here, but sure, I'm ready."
The men waited patiently while the entrance to the tunnel slowly opened.
The four of the new recruits made their way into the tunnel, and headed to the other side, to say their vows by the weirwood tree just north of the wall.

"Fucking Manderly."
A black haired, greying man, trudged behind Beck and Ferret, muttering to himself.
"Fucked his own sister."
Beck gritted his teeth. He could sense Ferret watching him. His face heated up and his heartbeat quickened.

They walked in silence for the rest of the journey until the four men reached the weirwood tree.

Beck was the first to kneel. Eventually they followed, not speaking a word.

"Let's do this." spoke Ferret.

"Night gathers, and now my watch begins."
The men spoke in unison.
"It shall not end until my death,
I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children,
I shall wear no crowns and win no glory,
I shall live and die at my post,
I am the sword in the darkness, I am the watcher on the walls,
I am the fire that burns against the cold, the light that brings the dawn, the horn that wakes the sleepers, the shield that guards the realms of men,
I pledge my life and honour to the night's watch,
For this night, and all the nights to come."
