Havens Peek

It was getting late and we had decided to stay one more night in this dreadful hospital. We all stayed in the room I had woken up in. The lights were off so we decided to light these old candles we found in the janitors closet. Dinah wheeled in two more hospital beds so that there was room to sleep. Dinah seemed protective of the younger two. Making sure they had somewhere to sleep and something to eat. She was like there guardian angel.

"Any relation?" I asked Dinah, pointing to the two young children.

We sat down on the floor placing supplies in our bags. We each made the decision to carry our own bags filled with things we needed.

"No. All my family is dead." Dinah said bluntly.
"I met Cierra about 2 weeks ago. Her family and I crossed paths before they were murdered. I ended up taking her under my wing."

"And the little one? Max right?" I looked back at the little boy who was still concentrated on his work.

"I found him wondering in the street. We were headed to the hospital- Me and a couple of others...  we knew that there'd be food and supplies. But when we got there they were waiting for us. The ripped apart everybody I was with. Cierra, Max and I managed to run inside before they could spot us. Thankfully we got away in one peace."

I took one more look at Max and Cierra. I couldn't imagine how much they've been through in only two months.

"What about you? Is there anybody left for you?"

I paused for a moment thinking. I didn't have much family. It had just been me and my dad my entire life. When he got sick I was in college and the only person to help me through his death was my bestfriend. She was always there for me no matter what I was going through. I couldn't imagine anything happening to her.

"I had a bestfriend. I don't know what happened to her." I looked down and continued to pack my bag, not wanting to talk about the subject anymore.

"What's their name?" Dinah asked not getting the hint.

"Her names Normani."

My stomach churned as I said her name.
All these thoughts ran through my head.
Was she dead? Had they taken her body?
It was a moment of awkward silence but it was quickly interrupted.

"Need any help?" Cierra asked plopping down beside them almost tripping on her way over.

"I think we're fine." Dinah giggled.
"Hey we need to get more of these needles. Maybe they can be used as a weapon!" She smiled holding the big needle in her hand.

"There's more in room 230. I was looking for some of those dinosaur cookies and I saw them in there."  Max said jumping out of the bed.

Dinah, Cierra and I all looked at Max and chuckled.

"Can I go with you?" He volunteered.

Dinah crossed her arms and looked him up and down.

"Fine. I guess you'll do." She grabbed a flashlight  and guided Max out of the room keeping him close.
"We'll be back."

I sat down and continued my work. Cierra stared intently and watched as I packed the bag. It kinda made me uncomfortable.. I had to say something.

"Did you want to help?" I asked.

"You have pretty eyes. My mom had eyes like you."

I looked up at Cierra and notice that she was staring right into my eyes. I felt bad for the girl. Her parents had been murdered and she was abandoned. Good thing she had Dinah.

"What was your mom like?" I asked

"She was beautiful. She loved to sing. She would sing to me almost everyday when I was younger." Cierra smiled

"She seems amazing." I added

Cierra silently smiled. I could tell that in her head she started to recall memories of her now deceased mom. She looked so innocent and afraid at the same time. How could someone look so fragile yet be so strong?  Deep down I knew she was a good kid.

"Those creatures you were talking about.. What do you call them?" I asked looking at her. My tone becoming get more serious.

"My mom called them población. In Spanish it means dwellers."
Dwelling had meant that those things weren't planning on leaving anytime soon.

"Did you hear that?" She asked

"Hear what?"
She stood up off the floor and walked towards the door looking outside of it. I followed her. We could see Dinah and Max running back towards us in full speed.

"There here!! Get back inside."  Their voice was barely above a whisper.

We rushed back inside waiting for Max and Dinah to run in before shutting the door.

Trying to hide them, Dinah placed Max and Cierra into their own cabinets which sat on the lower ground . I followed climbing into my own wall unit. We sat there in silence. All you could hear was the sound of our breaths. For a moment there was nothing and we thought everything was fine. Then the door flew open and two tall figures walked in slowly.
When Dinah described the creature as looking cold and lifeless I didn't understand what she meant until now.

I looked out the tiny slit that split the cabinet in half. They were pale. Their eyes dropped with all black like toxic waste. Their heads had been longer than usual and were dressed in all black. Blood reeked from their clothes. But yet.. They looked human.

They slowly walked around the room searching for any signs of life. I placed my hands over my mouth to keep my breathing quiet. My eyes widened as their hands stretched all the way to the beds moving the supplies around.

Dinah had told me earlier that their arms could stretch out 2 yards wide. The better to snatch up little kids with she said.

As they turned around to leave,  a tiny noise came from one of the cabinets. It wasn't loud, but somehow they heard it. They made there way over to check the noise out. I could see their legs as they walked pass me, making their way over to what looked like Cierra's cabinet.
My heart was beating faster now. If they find her... they find all of us and I wasn't ready to die just yet.

They were now inches away from Cierras cabinet. And through the middle of my cabinet I could see Dinah on the other side ready to attack. She had pushed her cabinet slightly opened watching the creatures and waiting for their move.

But then big loud screams erupted from the hallway. The two creatures spun their heads around and rushed out the door to follow the noise.
I let out a deep breath grabbing my chest.
Thank god! I thought. If those things would have opened the cabinet, Cierra would be dead right now. I slowly opened my cabinet and saw Dinah do the same. She rushed to the door closing it gentility and locking it.

"What was that? Or better yet.. Who was that?" She asked. Max and Cierra slowly descended from their wall units.

"I don't know. But who ever it was.. Just saved our lives."
