When Alex first looked at Max his stomach did a weird flip thing, his heart sped up and his hands got clammy. He just assumed it was from the excitement of talking to someone his own age for once. At first Max seemed a little put off by Alex but after a while he appeared to be at ease with him. For some reason this made Alex have a warm fuzzy feeling that he didn't quite understand. After an hour or so of talking to Max, Alex heard his father's booming voice telling him it was time to leave. As Alex left he felt disappointed that he had to leave his new friend Max, he also had a strange sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach that he didn't understand.

Later that night Alexander went on and on about the boy from the tavern. He told his father everything they talked about and all his feelings of finally having a friend. "He is not your friend, he is a commoner and a waste of your time", said the king. Hurt by his father's words all Alex could think to say was how he felt "But I like him."That caught the king's attention, "What do you mean you like him?" Asked the king in an irritated voice, a little too loud for Alex's comfort. Alex not knowing any better, told his father just what he meant, "He was sweet and kind of cute and I think I may have a crush on him." said Alex in a timid voice feeling smaller than he's ever felt. Shortly after this statement left his mouth Alex realized that he may have made a mistake. He was certain of it when his father's face turned red and that little vein in his forehead began to throb, then the yelling started- "MY SON WILL HAVE NO SUCH FEELINGS. WHEN I DIE YOU WILL MARRY A BEAUTIFUL GIRL, HAVE A FAMILY OF YOUR OWN, AND YOU WILL RULE THIS KINGDOM AS GOD AND I INTENDED! YOUR MOTHER MUST BE ROLLING OVER IN HER GRAVE JUST AT YOUR IMPURE THOUGHTS ALONE. IF SHE WERE STILL ALIVE SHE WOULD BE HEART BROKEN BY YOUR WORDS!" The king screeched at Alex as loud as he could. His harsh words echoed off the castle walls only to reverberate into his ears and wrap tightly around his heart like a vice. The king yelled for Alex to leave to his room stating that he would deal with his child later. With his head held low and his heart in pain Alex made the long trip to his room. The king, now alone and wallowing in anger, knew he would have to find a solution to his son's "little problem." There was no way he could be a fit ruler with such feelings. Having no idea what to do, the king had his servant call for the local witch, Matilda Blackwood, one of the wickedest witches to walk the earth.
