Was it a memory? It must have been. What else could it be? It was too real to only be a dream. It's happened before and I feel so certain about it this time.
"(Y/N)?"
"Ow, what the klunk was that for?" I rub my arm where Chuck had pinched me.
"You were about to walk into a tree." I turn and notice a large tree about two centimetres from my face. He laughs and we continue our way over to the Homestead. When we're almost to the door it opens, and Thomas and Newt walk out. For some strange reason I got the urge to run and jump on Newt, wrapping my arms around his neck and holding myself up so I didn't touch the ground. So, like any sane person, I did it.
"Woah, okay, hi there!" He says, wrapping his arms around my waist to help keep me up. "What was that?"
"I believe it's called a hug?" I grin up at him.
"Very funny." He rolls his eyes.
"Much laugh."
"What?"
"I don't know..." I smile knowing that I've completely confused the three of them. "So, how's Alby?"
"Hungry?" He asks. I decide to act oblivious to the fact he just avoided my question.
"Always." I go to race them to the kitchen when Thomas cuts in.
"Hungry? I feel like puking after what I just saw - no, I'm not hungry." He makes a pouty face and I hold in my weird fangirl squeals.
"Well, I am," Newt grabs my hand. "Let's go find some leftovers from lunch. We need to talk." He looks at me when he says it, but I know that the last part was directed to Thomas. We made our way to the Kitchen and, despite Frypans grumbling, we managed to get some food. I pull the boys along outside and we lean up against the thick ivy on the west wall. Newt filled Chuck and I in on the way over.
"Albys gone mad." Chuck says.
"All the best people are crazy." I casually add on in a sing-song voice. (Any Melanie Martinez fans out there????) The boys roll there eyes and continue eating their lunches.
"Newt, ever seen anything like that happen before?" Thomas eventually broke the silence. The smile that's usually spread across Newts face, was replaced by a sombre frown. I quickly grab his hand to reassure him.
"Never. But then again, no one's ever tried to tell us what they remembered during the Changing. They always refuse. Alby tried to - must be why he went nuts for a while." We all stay silent and think about what Newt said. Could they be controlling us. Whoever they are. "We have to find Gally, he's gone off and hid somewhere. Soon as we're finished, I need to go find him and throw his butt in the Slammer."
"Seriously?" I ask, mouth full of food. "What did he do?"
"Threatened to kill me." Thomas says, avoiding my eyes.
"We have to make sure it doesn't happen again. He's lucky we don't banish him." Newt also doesn't look at me.Chuck eventually leaves us, saying that he has business to take care of. Whatever that means for a 13 year old boy stuck in here.
"Here's what's gonna happen," Newt finally speaks again. "You two are with me for the rest of the day - we need to figure things out. Tomorrow, Tommy, you're in the Slammer. Then both of you are going with Minho." A large smile spreads across my face.
"Are you serious?" I ask, not being able to hide my excitement.
"Yes, just be careful, please." He winks at me then gives me a quick kiss on the cheek. "Also, Tommy, I want you to stay away from everyone except us for a while."
"Sounds great. So Minho's going to train us?"
"That's right - you're a Runner now. (Y/N), you are too, but no one else can know about it." I threw my arms around him. This is going to be awesome.Once lunch was over, the serious mood had arrived once again. Newt crumpled his trash into a ball and looked at the ground.
"I need you to accept something. We've heard it too many times now to deny it, and it's time to discuss it." My heart sank. I saw a startled look in Thomas' eyes. "Gally said it. Alby said it. Ben said it."
"Things are going to change." I whisper the words. At first I think no one heard me, but then Newt gives my hand a squeeze. I stare off into the distance, the memory playing in my mind as the boys continue talking.I tune back into the conversation when I hear them talking about remembering things from the past. Memories.
"I need you to open your mind," Newt says to Thomas. "Be honest if anything - (Y/N)?" I get up and run. Why did I do that? I mentally slap myself. I can't tell him about the memory. No, but I have to. It's the right thing to do. I hear them right behind me and I stop. "What the bloody hell was that for?"
"I need to tell you something," I tell him without turning around. "Alone." I death stare Thomas and he gets a fearful look.
"Tommy, go to the girl." Newt orders. "I want you to look at her till your eyes bleed, see if somethin' gets triggered in that shuck brain of yours." Thomas walks off, glancing back once or twice on his way. "What's wrong?" I take in a deep breath.
