"Emptiness is the pregnant void out of which all creation springs.  But many of us fear emptiness.  We prefer to remain...surrounded by things...we imagine are subject to our control."  ~Wayne Muler

Chapter Eight- RF101

July 28th 3012, 9:47am

“You look amazing.”  Claire insisted.  I raised an eyebrow at her.

Who would have guess that sweet innocent little Claire would wear such tight clothes?  Honestly, I’m still in shock that I was able to button the black skinny jeans she pushed me to wear.  The purple spaghetti strap shirt she shoved at me just passed my belly button and managed to make my moderately sized breasts look larger and more together.  I will admit I looked hot.  Well, I would if my bruises weren’t so clearly visible.  Claire shook her head again once she saw me focusing on them.

“I still can’t believe he did that to you.”  Claire said, referring to Ian and the beating that he gave me.

“I’m a void.”  I reminded her.  She snapped her head to me quickly.

“That doesn’t justify what he did!”  She said angrily.

I couldn’t help but notice how much she cared that someone had hurt me.  I was a void and she was human.  I was supposed to be the enemy.  She should hate me, but she didn’t.  She couldn’t have cared less what I was.  A smile rose to my lips at the thought.  Suddenly the seven people who hated me didn’t seem to matter.  Twelve out of nineteen was good enough for me, especially when Jaxon, Olivia, and Claire were in that twelve.

“Here.”  She said as she tossed a black leather jacket at me.  I caught it perfectly and examined it.  I was absolutely amazing but all I could picture was my blood getting on it or it lying crumpled on the floor of my cell.

“I can’t take this, Claire.”  I told her.  She rolled her eyes at me.

“Danny you need to cover those marks, honestly I keep picturing increasingly grotesque ways of kill Ian every time I see them.”  I gave a small laugh but still didn’t move to put the jacket on.  She raised her eyebrows at me and made her eyes bigger.  “Seriously Danny, put it on.  I have two more just like it anyway.”  Claire insisted again.  I had a feeling she wasn’t going to give up so I slid it on and pulled my hair over my shoulders.  She smiled and clapped behind me.  “See, you look good.  Now sit down.”  She commanded.  I did as I was told.  She pulled out some make up and got to work on covering the marks on my face.  “This is so fun.”  She said.  I rolled my eyes.

“Sure it is.”  I said sarcastically.

“It is.”  She insisted.  “I never had a sister to put make up on and dress up.”

I swallowed.  The way I looked at it there were only three adult couples.  Ian and Olivia had Jaxon and Liam.  Brantley and Leah had Jessica.  Jonathan and Rayleigh had Audrey.  Josh and Daniel were brothers but their parents weren’t here.  Then there was Claire, Kelsey, Leon, Rebecca, Elizabeth, Lane, and Cody without anyone.  What happened to their parents?

“Claire why do so many of the kids here not have parents?”  I asked quietly, hoping I wasn’t going to upset her.  She sighed.

“Well it’s different stories for everyone.”   She explained as she put some powder on my face.  “It was Ian and Olivia’s idea to make the resistance after the cell became mandatory in 3002.  There was Ian and Olivia Cole, Jonathan and Rayleigh Reed, Brantley and Leah Card, Joseph and Michelle Pridgen, Alex and Kristen James, Amanda Gibson, Nicholas Phillips, Aaron and Lindsay Mathews, and Billy and Sharron Tucker that started the whole resistance.  Ian and Olivia had a ten year old, Jaxon, to protect.  Rayleigh had a five year old, Audrey.  Brantley and Leah didn’t have a child yet but Brantley was a doctor and Leah was a teacher.  Ian knew that for the resistance to work they would need someone with some medical experience and someone to teach the kids.  Joseph and Michelle had Josh, he was twelve, and Daniel, he was ten.  Alex and Kristen had Rebecca, she was ten.  Amanda had Elizabeth, seven.  My dad Nick had me, seven.  Aaron and Lindsey had a six year old, Lane, plus Aaron was a mechanic.  Ian thought that he would be good for fixing things.  Billy and Sharron had Cody, seven.”  She explained as she lined my lips with a pencil.  Neither of us was really concentrating on what she was doing to me at that moment.  We were both lost in the story and I was lost in my thoughts.
