Chapter 13-- Kamio's Background

Kam was born and raised in southern California by his young single mother, Mary, who also raised his little sister, Mali. They lived in a small apartment with his mom's abusive boyfriend, Eric. Although Kam and Mary don't go through Eric's abuse Mali did. He would go into her room at night and touch his soon-to-be-step-daughter's vagina. Kam decided after the night he walked in on him on top of his eight year old sister, that Eric must go. It was anything from pretending to be beaten to telling his mom Eric was out with other women and men. Mary slowly got mad as his attempts were failed every time.

Kam and Mali were from two different men. Kam's dad was a one night stand, who doesn't even know who he is, and Mali is from Mary's last long-term boyfriend, David, who treated Kam like he was his own son. When David and Mary broke up, David fought to see Kam and Mali. He wanted joint custody of both kids. He even took Mary to court when she denied him the right to see them. At the end of the court, David only got to see Mali every other weekend. He loved Kam like a son, and still made plans with the young man who started to call him dad. Kam and David had a relationship that Mary was jealous of. Mary hated that Kam wanted to be around David, but at the end of the day, Mary loved David and David loved Mary. But she didn't like that he was brainwashing her son.

Kam got Eric arrested for child pornography, child molestation and rape. He was put on a sex offender list and now has to declare himself where he goes. He can't have kids and be apart of their lives. He can't go to parks and if he does he has to stay away for the children. Eric lost Mary and their unborn baby boy, who they decided to name Blaze. He has no visitation rights to any of the kids. Mali was put into Therapy and Mary felt bad that she didn't believe her son when he swore that his baby sister was being raped. She just didn't want to believe that she was living with a child sex predator.

Kam came out as gay when he was 13. About a year after Eric was put in jail and four months after Blaze was born. His mom, coming from a religious background, freaked. She swore up and down that Eric did something to him. Blaming yet another person for his life. He assured her it wasn't Eric. She claimed, unless he was going to 'get straight again' he could get the fuck out of her home and away from her family. So he did. He moved in with David, who more than happily took him in.

Tara showed up shortly after he moved in with David. She knew she'd have to be pretty convincing him. She saw him on his way home from school and her plan began. She told him of all the support they have for LGBTQ+ community at the school. She promised he won't have to worry about being rejected for things because he preferred to love boys instead of girls. He knew that he'd always be judged by who he loves, not how he loves. He'd be judged for who his heart falls for instead of his heart. He knew that no place could promise that. Tara told him how this would be a good fit. He could meet other 13 year olds who went through the same thing. He agreed, he wanted to be with his people. Not his family.
