And then my mom fell to the ground in a heap, blood seeping out of her.
And Bruce put me down, gently.
I started shaking and backed away from him, staring at the unmoving body of my mother. Her chest was still rising and falling, though her breathing was labored. What disturbed me though was the lack of emotion I felt inside my body. As I stared at her, I didn't feel sad. I didn't feel worried or angry.
Just shocked and empty.
I watched coldly, staring at the small stream of red dripping onto the polished marble floor, the garish pink dress billowing in cushions around me against the floor.
"Why did you do that?" I asked Bruce, my face and voice detached. I didn't move my eyes off my mother, but could see him shrug casually in my peripheral vision.
"She was going to kill her you know." He said seriously. "You know your lady." He motioned to Summer, a small smile on his face. "She even hired me to help. But I couldn't let it happen." He knelt down beside me, simply sitting and crossing his legs. "And I couldn't let you kill her." He said softly, staring calmly at the ground.
"Why couldn't you let me?" I said coldly, my voice wavering slightly. "What if I wanted to?" He chuckled darkly, shaking his head and rising to his feet.
"You may think that now, but you're in shock. Hate her or not, you would have regretted it." He started to turn, calling his last words over his shoulder. "I called the police and the ambulance, they should be here soon. You can tell them it was me if you want, I won't hold it against you." He said, no emotion in his tone. And then he left through the front door into the night, the cheery bells contradicting my current mood. I sat for a few moments, just staring blankly at the red puddle on the floor, when a muffled yell from behind me snapped me out of it.
Summer.
Immediately I stood up, the overwhelming desire to hold her overtaking me. I rapidly untied the ropes, releasing her from her hold against the mannequin. Finally, I then ripped off her gag, seeing her take a deep breath of air. Seeing her face, the relief and worry shining in her beautiful eyes, and the bruises coloring her skin, it finally broke the thin line inside that had been holding me together.
And the tears started pouring down my face.
I tightly wrapped her in a hug, sinking to the ground in her arms. I then cupped her beautiful face in my hands, staring deeply into those eyes I loved so much.
"Are you ok?" I asked, the worry cracking my voice. She simply smiled sadly, her own tears leaving her eyes.
"I've been better." She chuckled through her tears. "You?" I didn't speak. Instead I placed my lips against hers, kissing her desperately.
And lovingly.
"I love you." I whispered softly, the words easily leaving me. She smiled, kissing me gently.
"I love you too." She replied, pulling me tighter against her. And that is where we stayed until the police arrived. Cuddled tightly together, the sound of our heartbeats and sirens filling the dark night.
