At daylight, Cif awoke, remembering last night. She remembered everything Gideon had told her, and how damaged he really was inside, all the pain he had been through, and wondered why Dipper would try to hide any of this from her.
Cif didn't feel like getting up, all she felt like doing was lying in bed all day, the covers pulled over her head, but she knew she had things to do, and more answers to find in the odd town.
After after few minutes, Cif heard Stan, Dipper, and Mabel's voices echoing through the wooden building, which assured her they were up. She climbed out of bed, put on her bathrobe, and went down stairs, knowing not to mention what happened last night.
That didn't stop her from asking them about Gideon, and if they knew him.
"Morning," Stan said when Cif arrived downstairs. "Get dressed we're goin' out to breakfast," he said, his voice trailing off and full of boredom.
"Why?" Cif asked, not really caring.
"Dipper said my cooking sucks, now get dressed," Stan grumbled and rolled his eyes.
"Sure, whatever," Cif agreed, and went back upstairs to change.
She closed the door to her room and looked around for what to wear. After looking through all the clothes in her dresser, she pulled out a pair of jeans and a navy blue shirt, and pulled her black coat on over her shirt. After she got dressed she pulled her hair into a short ponytail on the back of her head.
She looked in the mirror, and noticed that her white sweater would look better with her outfit and shuffled through the dresser drawer trying to find it. Her hand felt a piece of crumpled paper at the very back of the drawer, and pulled it out.
She sat down on the carpet in her room, unfolded the paper, and started reading.
Stanford Pines,
I was wrong. I understand that now and all I can do is hope you can forgive me, for we have so much to fear in this town. Things that even surprise me, and I see now that we must work together, or we won't survive. If you care enough to read this, you must listen, for we are all in danger and we need to do something to stop this from happening, or everyone in the town will be killed. Your great niece and great nephew are in more danger than you can imagine, and they will be killed if do nothing, so please listen!
There is a great evil after all of us, and we have what it takes to stop it. I know you are not what you seem, and I know all of your secrets you hide in this very building. I need your help to save us, but I know this probably doesn't matter to you, after our hatred for eachother in the past.
This message was sent, from the evil we have been warned about:
Dull and broken,
The legend goes,
United you may stand, but when you fall, the force holding you together will break as well.
There will come a day when the most broken will prove themeslves to us all.
They stop at nothing to keep your people safe.
They are the broken.
They are not like us.
They will be destroyed.
As you can see, it seems bad, but I don't know what it means. I need your help. Please. You have to trust me to save us from this.
Gideon Gleeful
Cif's eyes widened, and her heart begun besting faster than ever. What did this mean, she thought. What was Gideon talking about? When was this written? So many questions she couldn't ask Stan.
After a moment of thinking she realized they were going to breakfast, so she shoved the note into the pocket of her jeans and hurried downstairs.
"Hey," she said to Stan, Dipper and Mabel, "I'm ready to go."
Stan looked at her a moment. "What's wrong, kid? You look like you're in shock or something."
Cif shook her head, not wanting Stan to know about the letter. "I'm fine, Mr. Pines," she reassured him, and looked at the ground, nervously pulling her hands into her sleeves.
Stan shook his head. "Whatever you say," he mumbled and they walked out they door.
When they arrived at the diner, Cif was brave enough to ask the question she'd been wanting to ask.
She looked up and cleared her throat nervously. "I have a question," she said, then realized how stupid she sounded announcing it.
"Go ahead," said Dipper, as he took a bite of his pancakes.
"What do you guys know about someone named Gideon Gleeful?" Cif asked the Pines family, her voice shaking, starting to regret she even brought this topic up.
There was a silence.
Moments later, Mabel's eyes filled with tears and Stan put his arm around her.
"It wasn't your fault," he said quietly.
Mabel sniffled and wiped a tear away as it ran down her pale pink cheek. "I know," she mumbled.
Dipper looked at Cif then at Stan, as if he was asking if it was okay to tell Cif the truth. Stan nodded as he looked back at Dipper, and closed his eyes.
Dipper looked back Cif, pain in his eyes. "Gideon Gleeful is dead, Cif," he said sadly.
"Why would you say that?" Cif asked Dipper, knowing that wasn't the truth.
"He was killed when he was eleven," Dipper answered.
"By who?" Cif asked.
"Don't know," Dipper confessed.
"How do you know he's dead, then?" Cif questioned Dipper.
"Stan told me, I was only fourteen when it happened." Dipper looked after Stan who looked at Cif.
"Where'd you hear about Gideon Gleeful?" Stan demanded.
Cif thought for a moment, before saying, "I was talking to someone yesterday, they brought it up. They started talking about him and I didn't know who he was." Although Cif felt bad about lying, she knew she couldn't tell Stan the truth.
Stan nodded, believing her.
Cif sat there awkwardly, knowing she shouldn't have asked about Gideon, obviously he knew Stan.
"Mr. Pines?" Cif asked, looking at Stan.
"Yeah?" Stan answered.
"You knew Gideon Gleeful?" Cif asked Stan nervously.
Stan nodded. "Yeah, I knew him."
"How?" Cif asked.
Stan sighed, and thought for a moment as his eyes filled with sorrow.
"It's a really long story," he answered.
